X1 Music Storage

We have an SDrive20i MSport on order.

Our previous car was a Mini Countryman with a hard drive and input for an iPod.

What facilities for storing music do we get with the X1?

Usb port to plug in what you like. I use a Usb stick.

With our mini if you plugged in an iPod you got the full interface including graphics. Is that possible with a USB stick?

You get the "album art" displayed on the screen if the image is embedded in the audio file. I have all my music ripped from CDs and stored in lossless FLAC format on a file server at home, and go through a batch process of converting to MP4 files and adding the album art when I copy music to a USB stick to use in the car. I use "dbPowerAmp Batch Converter" with a stored profile that sets the MP4 sample rate, and embeds the image from the stored "folder.jpg" album art into each MP4 file as it creates it. It works a treat to use in the X1. I bought several coloured small lanyards to attach to the very small USB drives, and have colour-coded sticks to choose depending on what mood I'm in

My previous BMW's have had the HDD or USB option for playing my music, the advantage with the HDD is you can just copy loads of stuff over and it stays in the car. You can even just pop a CD in and have that copy over with track data downloaded. None of this is possible in the X1.

I just took delivery of a new X1 (UK) and there is no HDD. Not a massive issue, you have to use a USB drive instead. I just ordered a tiny SanDisk Cruiser 16GB from Amazon for £5 and plan to leave it in the car - the USB slot is under the centre arm rest, and this tiny USB drive only protrudes about 5mm, so ideal.

So your standard USB port is in a different place to my 2020 LCI X1 xDrive 2.0i M Sport? I have all my music on a 32GB USB 3 drive that is plugged into the USB port forward of the twin cupholders that have a sliding cover.

I have the later high-speed USB C port below the armrest.
