Perfectly normal. You can check the oil level any time using the Idrive but the system only informs you when it requires a litre of oil. I generally keep a litre of BMW oil in boot , its overpriced but considering I may use ,at the most ,one a year its worth getting it.Just had this occur on daughter CooperS.

If you're at 53K miles...and the last time you topped off the oil was 20K miles...that was 33K miles ago...how is this "suddenly"?

And you should've had at an oil change or two depending on which CBS (condition based service) coding your market is set for.

It doesn't seem normal; you may have a tiny leak. When was the last time you changed the oil? One year ago? 2 years ago?

Seems odd that you need 1 litre of oil 8,000miles after the last service. Just wondering if the dealer actually filled the car up to Max on the last service.
7500 miles after my last service car indicated half way between Max/Min

One liter is too much. I believe you may have a small leak, probably too tiny to leave a mark on the floor, but still there.

Most likely from the oil filter housing (anywhere from the engine to the filter; it's a big part) or the oil cap on the crankcase (where you pour the oil).

One way to start diagnosing is after a somewhat long drive, you should smell burned oil in the engine bay.

I agree with others here, you have a leak. At 50K miles you should not be losing that much oil between oil changes.
