Unhappy Fuel pressure sensor malfunction

Hi, I own 2016 X1 F48 18d. A few weeks ago while I was doing my routine oil service BMW mechanic's found that fuel pressure sensor in common rail (13538577623) is damaged. The sensor had inside leak that cause flooding of DDE control unit (engine computer module) and air pressure sensor with diesel !. Repair cost was estimated on an amount equal to 15% of the price paid for the car (brand new) !. They want to replace sensors, gas pipes and DDE. Fortunately, the service offered to cover costs.

I want to ask You guys, did you ever come across with something like this? Fuel pressure sensor malfunction causing flooding of major electronic components with diesel. It's really hard to believe. Maybe service screwed something up and they want to hide something?

PS: The car has 50k km (31k miles) mileage right now, oil changed every 10k km.

I have right now the same problem. It seems that it is a known problem, not very usual and at this moment it doesn't require a recall.

I was on the highway when the sensor failed. I am lucky that no fire was involved.

The dealer doesn't want to pay the damage at this moment. I had an EGR recall 3 weeks ahead and I am wondering if this might be the cause.

Just happened to me today, fortunately should be covered.

The mileage that they found the error occurred at seems to coincide with when the car was previously with them, as they changed the upper engine mount, although I'm not sure if the 2 are linked.

exact same thing happened to my wife's X1, fuel pressure sensor cracked, diesel fuel travelled through the wiring straight to the ECU and the car started to develop some very weird faults.

I replaced the whole fuel line as the sensor is prat of the fuel line, the cleaned had the ECU cleaned and luckily that sorted everything out.

very stupid design and imo this should have been sorted with a recall.

Fuel pressure sensor failure - Diesel in electrical harness

Hi all

Thansk for the posts been a huge help. I have just had the exact same failure. 89000km (out of motor plan)

Is this an expensive repair, can it be done DIY?

The fuel lines are about 300$ (sensor included) and the labour was not complicated at all from what I understood from my dealer (1-2hrs labour). Part 1 from the diagram below:

Now, if you got lucky and no fuel has travelled inside the ECU, you'll be fine with just replacing those fuel lines.

To check if fuel has entered the ECU, simply have the dealer/garage remove the ECU connectors and visual inspect them and the ECU pins, if there are traces of diesel fuel, then most likely the ECU needs to be opened and cleaned and this is NOT a DIY, it's a very sensitive operation that must be carried out by a specialist.

Mine was flooded, so it had to be cleaned, but all is good now.

Have you had any joy with research on recourse for this? My X1 has just done exactly the same I have been quoted £7k for the repair! The dealer certainly hasn't mentioned that it is a known fault. I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can offer...?

Guys I need your help.

I had the same problem described above 'Fuel pressure sensor malfunction causing flooding of major electronic components with diesel. '

I did what was mentioned here and replaced the fuel pressure sensor and the gas pipes with new ones.

They even cleaned the DDE. Unfortunately, the problem was not fixed.

The mechanic says that we will have to try replacing the turbocharger but I think that the DDE should be replaced first.

What do you guys think?

As for the problems: the car doesn't accelerate the same way as before and sometimes 'it's shaking' a bit until it goes into the next gear (automatic).

So should I try replacing the DDE first or turbocharger?

Here are my errors:

298800- Charging pressure actuator, activation: Current too high
298B00- Charging pressure controller, output 2 (DC+), activation: Short circuit to B+
298E00- Charging pressure actuator, activation: Overloading
298A00- Charging pressure controller, output 1 (DC+). activation. Short circuit to B+
25D400 - Exhaust backpressure sensor before turbocharger, signal too high
S 0398- Power management, battery condition: Battery faulty or worn out
801189- Mixing flap drive, right Specification of desired position failed

I've had this same problem last week with 2016 X1 below is the inspection report from BMW, the car has always been serviced on time by BMW, how can a car have a failure like this. The cost is around $8000 to repair. If this is a common fault then I don't understand why they didn't recall.

"...found faults logged for Air mass, Charging pressure, swirl flaps, fuel pre supply pressure low. Inspected further and found Diesel in engine harness connectors for Air mass meter, Fuel pressure and temp sensor, Glow plug control unit. Also found Diesel in DDE connector. Found cause of fuel in engine harness from failed fuel pressure/temperature sensor. Will require replacement of Fuel pressure and temp sensor, Complete engine wiring harness, Digital Diesel Electronics as 1st step, clean out all other affected sensors and connectors and then retest for any other faults. Parts Ex Germany 3-4 weeks delivery."

Guys, I just got this nightmare on. Checked my fueal lressure sensor and the MAF. Both have diesel on them unfortunately. Not sure how to access the DDE to see if the diesel got all the way there
I found a mobile diesel specialist who is gonna come and run further test despite ISTA showing only the two sensors as problematic.

He sounded like my ECU might be good as my car still drives. Obviously I have parked as soon I found out with ISTA.

I hope this won't cost me a fortune but once this is solved I will put the car on auto trader.
I have owned a few different BMW's and the F48 is the full of reliability issues.
Rear taillights LED fail, torsion spring fail, sunshade fail, fuel pressure sensor and not to forget to EGR.
These are repairs that cost thousands of pounds at dealirship and they will not take accountability for any of it.
Really shame on you BMW!!!

Hi all, my first post and unfortunately I found this forum while searching for this same fuel sensor issue.

I bought a secondhand X1 6 months ago needing a ulez compliant car. It went into Limp home mode last week and my diagnostic tool shows all these same warning messages. A specialist has confirmed that the fuel pressure sensor has leaked and contaminated the wiring loom and caused other failures in the process.

I am upset now checking this and other forums to see that this has been a problem for a number of years, is clearly a design fault and yet BMW have done nothing.

Has anyone approached BMW UK about this and did they get a satisfactory repsonse?

It is not the first time BMW has left British consumers disadvantaged compared to other nations. The universal joint failure of the X5 that was a recall everywhere except here is one I have endured also and successfully got BMW to replace the gearbox that was destroyed by the defective part.

Has anyone tried contacting the media to gain a wider audience and see if it is more common than we think? I have drafted an email in anticipation of contacting the BBC Watchdog programme.

Facing a £5000-£8000 repair bill on a car I spent £16500 on six months ago is outrageous especially when replacing the sensor before it leaked, would have been so much cheaper. I would warn anyone not to buy a secondhand BMW until it’s sorted.

Any help and advice is much appreciated.

Good luck with BMW UK and keep us posted! I am getting the two sensors MAF and fuel replaced, along with the fuel lines as the sensor is a part of the lines. Hoping this will solve the issue.
Getting it done by a mechanic rather than getting robbed by BMW.
The X1 is the worst BMW I ever owned.
As for the dealership, you will be lucky to get a small contribution from them and still paying them a couple of 1000s.
This is a problem on Minis too.
Reading on their forum BMW mini charge sums 4.5k, 5.5k
Crazy!!!!
