The interesting thing is that he says porpoising is a damping issue as well, and the cars with the most porpoising have the highest down force generation.

This is intriguing because on F1 technical they are speculating Mercedes got the rear damping wrong in particular. Because they are trying to get the car to squat like last year to increase down force generation at high speed but they got the linkage and pivot positions all wrong causing the porpoising to be in the rear, because the front doesn't bounce at all unlike other cars that porpoise like Ferrari where all 4 wheels bounce. F1 technical also suspected the w13 to produce insane amounts of downforce on the front floor mouth due to the way it's shaped, and in other portions of the floor which contributes to porpoising when those pressure zones move about. But the high downforce notion kind of makes sense because the w13 is still able to be 3rd fastest despite running a compromised ride height and suffering from the major bouncing issues.
Btw I think this is THE engineer alongside Collin Chapman that pioneered ground effects.

But what they say matches what James Allison said, about how the tv announcers were not quite right about porpoising being just the floor stalling. If this is the case it might actually be a case of the rear suspension causing the issues on the Merc. Very intriguing to see how they solve it, and when they do I want to see just how much down force the w13 can really make. If the engineer was right and the cars that bounce the most make the most down force the w13 might actually have a ton of pace hidden.

Does anyone think Max Verstappen looks like a less handsome brother of Robby from Cobra Kai?

McLaren is close second in bouncing. Ferrari is still porpoising quite a bit end of straights, despite their lap times. Raising the car to eliminate some of the bouncing doesn't seem to slow down the Ferrari as much as the Merc.

The ferrari isn't raised, they have slots and cuts in their floor to stop the air flow from stalling (redbull has these too) so they can run their desired ride height. On some tracks where it is really bumpy they might have to increase ride height slightly but nothing to the level mercedes has to - because merc doesn't have those same cuts and slots. But the negatives with these slots is that you are sacrificing some floor performance to stop porpoising.

Mercedes on the other hand is trying to stop porposing without having to compromise any downforce generation, and if they pull this off I really believe they will gain A LOT of time. Ferrari is trying to do this too with their new floor.

Whether or not Mercedes actually achieves this, I truly think this is what it is. Its boom or bust. You can't tell me Mercedes, 8-time Constructors, can't figure out their car or made a car this bad. I think they know that they would have a fast car if they can sort out the chassis and aero. It's a matter of when and how fast they can make the changes especially when they're limited in resources due to regulations.

As intermittent customer, F1 does not get priority if a technical issue arises. Diversions around Russian air space means more stops for long haul flights.

Curious that toilet tissue to america takes priority.

Bets on which race will be canceled?

Porpoising is an issue on most 2022 #F1 cars.
Red Bull have found their solution in a very clever & legal suspension innovation. So they can now run super close to the track.
With gas springs and inerters banned, they've exploited a non-newtonian fluid filled damper.

I spoke to RBRs ex-Honda suspension engineer, Kesonyu-san about the system. The NNF filled damper does not affect normal suspension movement, but when the car starts to porpoise its non newtonian properties resist the bouncing. 'Porpoising Intervention Engineering' he calls it !

Jo explained to me the fluid is hard to engineer, operate & maintain. Needing to be at a higher temperature, so the RB18 rear pushrod set up places the fluid damper close to the hot exhaust. The mechanics joke it's the custard damper, but stripping the hot damper runs risks...
