It's starting to hint like Mercedes is now putting their chips in for 2023. I'm not entirely convinced that they're throwing in the towel for 2022 but I don't see them making a major recovery this season. That car is just absolute garbage from PU to Aero.

It's a long season and I wouldn't count them out. We're only 2 races in with a totally new car

I tend to agree but as the season moves along, it's looking less likely. I'm not as confident in their team as a lot of others though. Even if they do start catching up, Ferrari and Redbull will continue improving from their current benchmark as well.

Funniest part about the movie "Downfall" is that he keeps waiting for Steiner's attack to save them.

This is going to be the first year since 2014 that there will be a pole sitter not named Lewis Hamilton in Melbourne.

Oh yeah that's right.

"Mercedes will recover and compete with Red Bull and Ferrari."

Almost laughed typing that.

Marko: "Ferrari has the most universal car".

Marko highlights the versatility of the car they have created at Maranello

He explains how much Red Bull is conditioned by the excess of weight

Marko: "Ferrari has the most universal car" - SoyMotor.com

ANA VÁZQUEZ | 30 MAR 2022 - 13:13

Helmut Marko compares Red Bull and Ferrari after the first two races of the season. The Red Bull advisor points out that their rivals have designed a more versatile car compared to his own, with the main problem being excess weight and what that entails.

2022 looks set to be a season in which the title will be decided between Ferrari and Red Bull. Christian Horner's team have already had two weekends of real fire to study their rivals and Helmut Marko shares the first conclusions. The Austrian sees the Scuderia with a versatile car, in contrast to his own, which is overweight.

"Ferrari has the most universal car. It is fast in all circumstances, with any type of tyre, at any temperature from the start," Marko told Servus TV.

"Our car is too heavy. If you are ten kilos over the minimum weight, that's three and a half to four tenths of a second on a track like Saudi Arabia," Marko added.

Marko explains that the excess weight they have is a limiting factor, as it means they have to spend on lighter materials, which tends to be more expensive and compromises their budget.

"Reducing weight means more expensive materials, which are lighter, and you also have to make new parts. So the plan now is to combine the next big upgrade with lighter construction to stay within this financial framework. We can't build parts twice," Marko warned.

Despite the challenge, Marko insists he would rather have Ferrari than Mercedes as a rival. The Red Bull advisor highlights the similarities between the two teams and is happy to fight with them this year.

"Ferrari is similar to us. There is passion, there is emotion, sportsmanship and respect and you can feel that in all areas. We have a competitive relationship, but with sporting rules and you can feel this not only in the drivers, but also in the technical set-up or the design. You can exchange ideas with Ferrari. It's nice," Marko concluded.
This is kind of cute.

Marko actually likes Ferrari. Rightfully so.

He's only kissing ass because if their engine plans fall through, only Ferrari was even willing to discuss supplying them.

I don't believe it until it's done. This deal has been trying to happen for years. All it takes is just another scandal like Dieselgate to kill it again.

I'm with you - they've been beating around the bush with this for such a long time but reliable sources have confirmed it. I think more details will come thru in the near future but Audi/McLaren + Red Bull/Porsche talks have been ongoing for quite a while now.

Looks like the decision that Audi and Porsche are going to enter the sport, probably just as engine suppliers to Redbull and McLaren by the looks of things.

Porsche power units for sure but I think Audi is trying to take majority ownership of McLaren without dissolving the team or the brand in addition to power units.

A former lotus engineer talks about porpoising. Very insightful and a short video if you guys want to watch.

The interesting thing is that he says porpoising is a damping issue as well, and the cars with the most porpoising have the highest down force generation.

This is intriguing because on F1 technical they are speculating Mercedes got the rear damping wrong in particular. Because they are trying to get the car to squat like last year to increase down force generation at high speed but they got the linkage and pivot positions all wrong causing the porpoising to be in the rear, because the front doesn't bounce at all unlike other cars that porpoise like Ferrari where all 4 wheels bounce. F1 technical also suspected the w13 to produce insane amounts of downforce on the front floor mouth due to the way it's shaped, and in other portions of the floor which contributes to porpoising when those pressure zones move about. But the high downforce notion kind of makes sense because the w13 is still able to be 3rd fastest despite running a compromised ride height and suffering from the major bouncing issues.
