Active cruise control - cuts out in strong sun, but doesn't switch to non-active CC

hi all

I know this is the X1 forum...but X2s are closely related under the skin

When there's strong sunlight directly in front of my car the Active Cruise Control cuts out, which I understand happens with these camera-based ACCs.

It comes up with a long error message on the Idrive screen that says '...you can continue using cruise control without distance control'.

But I can't seem to reactivate the CC at all (even without distance control). In fact I often can't reactivate any form of cruise control sometimes for up to 8 minutes even when the sun is no longer in front of the car.

I don't mind losing the Active CC for a short time, but it should surely default to 'normal' CC, or at least let me switch it on.

I had the dealer look at it, but of course they said 'no error codes', and couldn't replicate the problem..

Does anyone have any experience with similar situation, and if there was a solution?

thank you

You have to press and hold the shorter distance button for 5 seconds to activate NON Active CC.
I was very happy to find that function because the ACC is very annoying

Hi xlr8it, thanks for that info.

Does that work even if the ACC stops because of sun, or only if you deliberately want to switch off the distance detection function? I've tried the latter while ACC is active, but of course now that I want to try it out when ACC is cancelled by the car, the sun's not very strong

cheers

Satz, im not sure on that, when i found out how to use it without ACC I was a very happy man and never used the distance function again, to many things turn it off, like sun, rain, fog, trucks, motorcycles , trailers and shadows.
My previous vehicle was a 2007 Audi Q7 with radar guided cruise and it never faulted, I was very disappointed with the BMW system.

Wow it seems that thing is completely broken. I guess that creates a completely valid reclamation case towards BMW.

Although I raised the original topic on here, overall the ACC is actually not so bad. It definitely needs further fine-tuning, and yes, a radar-based system would have been better.

But obviously this is a cost-cutting measure as it probably uses the same camera that does several functions like the auto headlights, auto mirror dimming, and even the auto wipers.

Another thing that annoys me is when the car in front pulls into a slip lane completely, and then slows down, my car slows down dramatically as it probably thinks the other car is still in front of me!

Despite all that I still use ACC as often as I can (partly because it's kinda exciting to feel it brake and accelerate on its own, and coz I paid extra for the toy)

Hopefully BMW will improve the algorithms with time, even if that doesn't help with the bright sunlight issue...

Camry has radar-guided active CC!!

Was skimming through the brochure for the current model Toyota Camry and was shocked to find that this 'humble' vehicle has a 'milliwave radar' based active cruise control, rather than the camera-based system that our not-so-humble X1/X2s have

Hi xlr8it,

That is valuable information.
I will try the Japanese F39.

Thank you very much.
