If You Could Go Back

Had a nice chat with my nephew tonight about what I would have done differently looking back. The main thing I would have changed was investing at his age and not blowing all of my money. It saddens me that they still don't teach the power of compounding interest in schools, he was blown away when this idea was explained. He's 15 by the way and does some work for my businesses when he's around. He was able to make over $900 in a week a month ago and I showed him what just 15% of that amount invested could do.

So the question is, if you had the chance to go back in time what would you have done differently?

Honestly, I’ve considered this a few times and a few people have asked the same question. I’ve messed up, done shitty things and made poor decisions. But all those things made me who I am today and if I hadn’t had those experiences or learned from them, I wouldn’t be where I am now.

When I bought that shitty 1987 924S in 98 and 911s were cheap as hell...

Oh well, I agree that what we did and do make us who we are. Butterfly effect and all too...I probably would have never met my wife if I went a different path, which means I wouldn't have my daughter or known her son. Naw, I'll pass.

I like the advice that a couple should both work or one have two jobs, then live off of the lower income and save the higher one. If at all possible.

When young (under 30 at least), save as much as possible and learn to invest (whether securities, real estate that you manage, etc)

Use other people’s money, like getting a job that pays for school and then using that to go to college or grad school.

Military service is underrated.

As a teen I would've spent some time working for a successful small-medium business with the intention of gaining some understanding of what it takes/how to run a business.

I cleaned up job sites as a young teen, 12-14 I learned basics just being observant DO's & DONT's

I was a lot boy too, seeing used cars being reconditioned then sold, good people skills

I parlayed all that experience/knowledge into a nice contracting business

Ok, it makes sense that kids should work or be in a real-world internship or we're going to have 50 million Uber drivers living with parents @ 35

Not spoiling them is difficult but helping with just basics will help them be creative imo

Edit: my son Josh 13 almost 14 is a little man, self confidence sky high, outgoing and a bimmer whore like his dad

I want to teach him everything I never knew as a teen if that makes sense, I asked if he wants to be rich he said it'll be great but that's not his motivation it's experiences and quality of living, if being rich means working 24/7 and stress no thanks he said...

He gets the concept of the "business man & the fisherman" https://paulocoelhoblog.com/2015/09/...e-businessman/

Easiest question ever. If I could go back it would be to that December day in 2015 when I was moving my Moto Guzzi in the garage to change the oil. One foot slipped, I lost my balance, and the bike started to go over. It leaned over almost to the point of the mirror touching the floor. Instead of just letting it drop I used 110% of my low back strength to pull the bike back up to upright.

2 days later I was flat on my back unable to move in excruciating pain. Ruptured a disc at L4/L5. Months of PT and chiro and a scary moment where I realized I was craving my next Tramadol dose, and I was 90% pain free. It will never be 100% and occasionally I do something dumb and it flares up again, taking me out for a couple days to a couple weeks.

Looking back, I should have just dropped the bike on the floor and paid the $200 for a new mirror and clutch lever.

My two "never-skimps" are high thread count sheets and good brakes & tires. Perhaps that makes 3, but nevertheless.... I like the thinking behind yours though. Some incidents have happened here for these to be a priority.

I have only two major things that would change about my life. I would have made a better choice or just waited on whom to have children with, and I would have answered the phone the last time my father called me before he passed. We got into a verbal argument the last time I spoke to him, which ended in my hanging up on him. It was the last time I spoke to him. He called the next day and I refused to answer as I was still pissed at him. He died the next morning. I kick myself daily for this.

Everything else, poor decisions and whatnot, only got me where I am now. Aside from the 2 aforementioned aspects, I couldn't be happier with where I am in life.

BUT- then you wouldn't have your kids. One thing changes everything.

"Our" kids as painful as that is to type. Had I chosen more wisely, I feel it would have broadened their horizons in life. Having a deadbeat mom has severely hurt them in life. Her laziness has been picked up by them. I'm also viewed as a tyrant because I have a nice, clean home, a nice car and work hard for what I have. Rather than being pushed and motivated, they have been coddled and told it's ok, you don't have to: go to school today, make good grades to be be good people, go to work today, pay that bill today, etc. Love my boys more than life itself, but it's hard watching them struggle as young adults due to their mothers influence in their lives.

Same as OP, I would have started investing earlier.. And I wouldn't have gotten rid of that bitcoin I bought back in 2007... man that one really hurts.
