Hey, I haven't done it myself either, but planning to buy one from the bay soon.
As for the instruction, I think ours should be pretty much as this (credit to the OP): https://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210582

hey fredgoogie, did you end up taking it off? Seems like ours is different than other BMW cars. Hoping to get some insight.

Looking at the 'exploded' view on a certain parts website, it looks like the each grille has about 8 or 10 clips. I know on my E90 to change the grilles, you had to pop the front trim panel forward to be able to push the grills out from the back. It was too hard to just pull the grills forward from outside the car (to stop thieves I guess)

Potential trouble on the X2 is that the front trim panel is one piece (nosecone), so not sure if you can just undo a few bolts at the top to gain enough forward movement to reach behind the grilles?

Fellas, i did end up replacing the grills.

Steps as follows:
1. Remove the rubber trim on top of bumper
2. Pull back rubber strips on head lights
3. Undo the torx bolts
4. Pull back the front bumper
5. Slide in hand and release top clips and side clips then the head lights will become loose - it was impossible to reach the bottom clips
6. Once the top and the side clips are loose, pull the kidneys slightly towards you and they should come out - a little bit of force maybe required.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the instructions. Would you say this video is pretty much the same steps?

Hey mate yes exactly, however I was unable to access the bottom clips...thus I just yanked the existing grills out once the top and side clips were unclicked.

Just keep in mind that you may break one or two clips when you are yanking out the existing grilles however if you ain't putting them back it makes no difference.

I am liking that as well. Now, if I were to do this, the only thing remaining to remove/replace is the corner triangles in the bumper. Hate the color.

Garage List
I have been thinking about that too. I want the water spot grey gone. I’d rather replace all with carbon fiber but we are the redheaded stepchildren of performance cars.

HI Fredgoogie, fellow Aussie here.

Good to see another Mineral Grey X2. I went for that colour but with the MSport, not X.

Are your black grills glossy, or a satin finish? From the photo it looks sort of satin?

cheers

No surprise that item is out of stock now, been on my watch list for a while..
Need to ask the seller if they have more of that grill coming in.

I'm thinking of getting body-coloured kidney grilles... just to visually make them look smaller.

I think they're too big for the car, unfortunately, like most of the new BMWs.
