Nice, thanks for sharing!
I wish they didn't change the battery position for the newer series. It makes audio upgrade harder now, have to route the power cable from engine bay to the trunk. |

Oh, it's an AGM battery! That explains why the car can use regenerative charging and reduce the alternator load. These batteries tolerate deep-cycling.
I wonder if the car occasionally turns the "green" behavior off and charges more normally from time to time, to restore the charge soak. Maybe in colder weather, or whenever the charge drops below some threshold. Also, the plastic is there to allow cool air to circulate around it instead of engine bay heat. Longer life and better performance. Common approach these days in many designs, actually. Many take in outside air from the cowl or grille. Last edited by //TMT; 09-24-2019 at 11:03 PM.. |

Via what mechanism? The Brakes are not tied to electrical system. AGM doesn't have any correlation to that. It is just a better platform. I install Optima Yellow Top AGM batteries into all my cars for years. Not including this, my first, BMW.

I don't have a solid source but my belief is that the alternator is simply not commanded to generate charging current at all times. When decelerating, the fuel injectors are shut down however, and if the car holds the transmission in gear, the kinetic energy of the car drives the engine, and the alternator is kicked in. This provides the regeneration and slows the car just like extra downshifting would.

What he said... the dumbest thing is that when you just sit and idle the car it won't be charging the battery! (which is now why I only have the tenders/maintainers to top off the cars that have been sitting too long).

Now that I have owned the BMW over a year, I've been able to get more comfortable with it.
With that being said, I redid my battery tender wiring. I don't know why I didn't remove the panels in the first place, but it was so much easier this time. Updated pictures below: |

Very nice! Have you considered sticking the connector through the cowl, up toward the windshield so you don't have to even open the hood to connect?

You did make me think long and hard about this. Researching a waterproof solution that is tucked and installed on vent area. Let me see if I can find an easy solution and then I will share.

I figured it out. Not too happy though for LHD drivers.
The Wiper is in the way or it would of been perfect! And I don't want to have a long ass cable going across the front of my windshield. My routine weekly is to pop the hood, grab the cable from the tender on a shelf, plug it in, close the lid slightly and done. If I were to use the area listed in green (see pic), I'd just have to pull the cable across the front of the car walking around it to plug it in. Maybe it's good enough, and if I practiced routine it would be OK, but for me, kinda want to just get out of car, grab cable, plug in and be done with it - and that's not going to happen 'cleanly installed'. Here is the pic: |

I'm doing it. Ordered: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N57XLNS...v_ov_lig_dp_it We'll see if I like it when I get it. Also thinking about fender-well hidden way of doing it. Stay tuned. |

Yeah, the cowl does look perfect, until you look at it with the hood closed.
I was thinking just thread the pigtail with the connector right through some gap, and leave the wire hanging out in the well, below the wipers. Then fish it out and make the connection when needed. If it needs to be restrained, maybe a little magnet taped to it, that holds it to something like a screw or another magnet, whatever. Another idea was to go way up to the right - in the corner of the windshield by the driver's side. The cowl wraps up and around that spot, and there's a kind of rubber lip so it's not quite as simple to poke a clean hole. |
