The answer is no. I'm sure bland/boring was a common narrative. They changed that with this car.

Give it time because the G22 will grow on you. There are elements of this car that are fantastic and far superior to the outgoing model.
So, you are posting the most blatant 2 series design with candle lights *(BMW should never offer that) and the mediocre front bumper to prove your point.
In my opinion the actual 2 Series is one of the most beautiful BMW's as they kept the grill dimensions, the Hofmeister kink, the DNA of the Corona Rings that look excellent in this conservative yet elegant headlights. A balanced design overall.

*In the F22, the middle design line goes through the handle flowing and connecting all the elements including the handle and front fender the boomerang.
The new one has the handle slapped in there, just to make sure you have one.

*In the old one the door is bulked and flows with the rear fender while in the new one it does not.

*The F22 bottom contains another elegant line that flows through and which gives an overall look that is connected with the line described by the middle bulge of the body forcing the light to give you a reflection line in any angle of the car. (see pic 2)
In the new car the black bottom looks like was glued later by some ricer guy.

* In the old one the bottom line is arched up and connected with the rear spoiler line showing continuity and an aerodynamic kinetic design that inspires movement and airflow.
In the new one the bottom line doesn't even flow with the rear bumper line.

*The F22 hood was much more balanced and perfectly integrated with the vehicle as a whole, while the new bonet looks longer and like it doesn't belong in there, or atleast id doesn't scream "compact" or small and nimble...

* The vertical line in the front fender on the new one looks not only odd but out of place. Let's not mention the terrible placement right beside the arch of the fender where the two elements just won't work together! It looks like an accident dent or something. A vertical line thrown under an horizontal one and right beside a curved one? WTF is that?

* Actually, while I am looking at this car in this OFFICIAL pictures, I don't have the feeling that I am seeing a vehicle that was designed like that, but rather an odd repaired vehicle.

The taillights are just horrendous and the front triangles are not far either.

I am in the opinion that we can't even falk about a design language but rather a mix of elements.

It looks quite generic otherwise with nothing that will awe the audience. They could do a much better job especially when they had already a beautiful predecessor.
At least they kept the kidneys to a decent size....
Just looking at the reflections of both cars you can already see the attention to detail between the two.

The interior looks better and the door panels are really nice.

Technically however, sounds really good on the paper and I like the specs.
Such a terrible analysis. Bimmerpost needs a downvote button.

I like the front other than the weird brake duct mesh. No idea what the designers are doing with the rear. Looks like a 4 series tail light vertically smushed up.
Full access to engine power with MT would be desirable. I would get DCT if they offered. And hopefully they are joking about the M240i xDrive weight; 3600 lbs would be barely acceptable for M2.

Thanks for the pics. I wonder if there won't be an aftermarket for inserts to replace the grey triangle with a body colored piece. Might be an improvement.

I love the way it looks.
Only question that remains: am I bold enough for the Thundernight?

Looks great. There is configurator on bmw.de with black accents and wheel option.

Is that not a representation of the F22 at launch? Yes it is so it's totally fair seeing this is the photos of the G42 launch cars. Throwing in F22 LCI ignores the fact that these cars will also get LCI improvements. A total nonsensical rant but it seems to be par for the course around here with the large contingency of posters constantly yelling at clouds.

The M235i was also available at launch. You're comparing a base 228i without M Sport package to M240i.

I'm not comparing anything to specifically the M240i as the white 230i photos exists in this thread as well. The fact is that that the last gen looked vanilla boring at launch. This new generation does not. That photo depicts what the 2 series looked like at launch as do these 230i and M240i photos. It is what it is. You can dig up launch photos of the F22 with the M Sport package if you want but that's probably not going to help your case much.

I think this looks amazing and the rear is not great but it's fine. The whole thing has a cyberpunk look to it.

The only fact is that majority of people are posting and commenting on the M240i and you post a pic of a base vanilla 228i. Everything else is your opinion.

Base vs base. To me new car is sharper (modern) and more interesting. I appreciate BMW going away from the puffy pillow look.

I’ve read every post in this thread. I know it’s 2021 and people like to complain about everything, but wow people are on fire!

Main complaints in this thread:

Triangles – get a new bumper or IND will likely have an aftermarket solution. (Or you can black out the triangles yourself.) Half of the people on here would do that no matter what the OEM bumper looked like. Let’s keep in mind that the font end of the F87 is a bit of a mess too.
Taillights – Yes, I’m not a huge fan of them either, but they aren’t that bad and you can always get an aftermarket solution. Blacking out the white parts of the taillights already makes a vast improvement in the look.
Weight – Yep, cars weigh more than they did in the previous generation. It’s a little heavier than most people would expect, but how often do people really notice this when driving? Only at the track?
No Manual– Welcome to economics 101.
No Coronas – As others have noted, this is a nod to the 2002.

Pros:

It’s an ICE
It is/will be available in RWD
The B58 motor is fantastic
The price is almost unchanged from the F22
Interior and Tech is good / good enough
LSD is standard
Hof Kink is present
Wide wheel arches

I’m curious what other car people would get if you want a small coupe.

Audi? They don’t make a car in this class. (A/S5 competes with the 4. TT is really small)
Mercedes? They don’t either. (C-Class coupe competes with the 4. )
Porsche? They’re a lot more $$.
Miata or BRZ? Sure, but you’ll have to compromise on the lower power to weight ratio.
Infinity Q60? Non Red Sport models you’ll have less power than the M240 and if you choose to go with a Red Sport you’re spending and extra ~$10k

My point is that the pros outweigh the cons. Every car is going to have things that people like and dislike about them. Would we rather have BMW have 6 LCI iterations of the e46? Sometimes change is good, even when people are resistant.
