Hi Tjalle, thank you for the reply. I see your point.
However I’m not concerned about how dynamic EDC is. My concern is the benefit (or lack thereof) of EDC when in comfort mode. I thought that opting for EDC would make the ride softer, which is something my two small kids that I usually carry would appreciate.

If EDC does not make the ride softer in Comfort mode, I will forget about it and not bother.
But before I do, I’d like to hear a justified opinion.

I find the X1's I drive softer in comfort with the electronic suspension than the test car I drove that had standard suspension.
All were on 18" tyres.

OK - if E90 is right, and what BMW says in INFO is correct - and I don´t doubt it - then there IS an improvement in comfort mode.

I did not know - now I know. I take it I have same system in my X4.

As usual - INFO from SA has been "vague".

It has been "said" in many threads in the X3/X4 forum, that going for non-RFT:s will improve comfort.

Living in Australia - and Sweden- I would have both mini-spare and kit with 12V compressor and sealent, because changing wheel at roadside is no easy task.

No the X4 has a different system

X1 has Dynamic Damper Control (DDC) a 2 stage manually selected system

X3/X4 has Electronic Damper Control (EDC) a system that can almost instantly vary the damping depending on road conditions.

Both are optional systems.

Basically the X1 system is in hard or soft mode. The X4 system can change the hardness of the shocks as road conditions change according to sensors in the car. X1 system has no sensors.

DDC is more advanced system over EDC and X1 has EDC.

E90Fleet you are pulling your info from your finger obviously.
EDC is not just hard and soft mode, that is EDC on VW AG cars, in Audi Q3 or VW Tiguan or Golf the EDC works as you say, on BMW the the EDC can adjust the stifness dynamically and in far more levels than two.

I don't think BMW is going to offer you a job anytime soon.

You need to check your facts before making defamatory statements !

Direct from BMW

X1 has DDC
It is a 2 stage system with no sensors

This is as I explained almost a year ago. Moreover, BMW made a change to the suspension settings of DDC equipped cars from Jan 2016 production, which slightly improved the "Comfort" ride setting of DDC equipped cars. I could find my original post, but I've reposted it several times...including in this thread.

E90Fleet is, in my opinion, a wonderful font of knowledge on all things F48, and I'd certainly think twice...maybe three times...before querying his technical knowledge and understanding ...although I reckon he's always susceptible to being caught out by the tricky, market-specific changes in spec

look at the EU tech manuals, not US ones.
it is EDC for X1 and thje superior systems is DDC/DD (dynamic drive),
the names are different for nafta regions also in catalogues and pricelists.

and since you are having the pdf open also read how it works, because it is not simply "set it to option1 or option2" , it does not have the dynamic sensors but it has the same control unit with the main sensor.

E90Fleet if you need a job, you need to start reading. Really, you do.

Whats with the personal attack on my job status ???

I have both the UK/SA and USA manuals
They are exactly the same on suspension.
Marketing may have different names in different countries. Does not change how the system operates.

Main controller may be shared, but that doesnt mean they operate the same.
Shocks are shared by USA and EU cars

Only has 2 modes and only changes the solenoid valve
Both rebound and compression are affected by the single solenoid

open a configurator for X1, download a pricelist and catalogue and tell me if you see DDC or EDC for F48 there.
The dynamic drive or adaptive drive functions are not present in F48 that is clear to everybody, what is not true that the 2 damper characteristics are all it can do in f48.
There is still a controller that adjusts the stiffness dynamically. I don't how many times I have to repeat it, but probably 1000 times would not be enough to someone who is throwing around pdf snippets in every single thread on bpost.

2 damper characteristics are all it can do in f48.
Marketing can call it whatever they want

Please show me any BMW technical documents that show the F48 has more than 2 characteristics or does any dynamic changes.

They show that for many other models but say only 2 for F48.

sDrive 18i. The days of restless youth are, alas, over.
Quiet, simple, relaxed cruising with the family is what I’m after.

And still not sure whether EDC or DDC or ABCDEFG, or whatever it's called, would work for me...

I am interested in this as I find the standard tyres very noisy on course surfaces - where did you get your 17" wheels from and were they expensive

And what size wheels? I'll probably get shot down but I'd say the difference in COMFORT is negligible in the more base models with EDC, but it will tighten things up in SPORT mode. We have an M Sport and I believe that optioning EDC actually removes the lowered ride height and makes the vehicle softer in NORMAL mode whilst stiffening it up in SPORT.

So in summary if you're going for a basic model and don't want to stiffen the ride with EDC you can probably do without...

Let the cavalry commence shooting

Just recently purchase the X1 xDrive without DDC or whatever. 18" Pirelli RF and its wonderfully compliant as is and pretty quiet for RF's. Of course I'm coming from a 2 coupe so that may be part of it.

Same exact experience for me. Our new X1 rides very nicely but firm enough for good handling. I also have a 228M Sport which is comfortable but firmer. The X1 actually rides better than our old Honda CRV.
