Time for new winter tires

I have a 335xi and I need to replace my very old Pirelli Winter Carving tires. They are the studded tire and I have been happy with them.. but they have probably 6 or 7 winters on them right now and last winter I could not get them to stay balanced. I would get them balanced and a few days later they would be shaking all over again.

I live in Alaska so I'm looking for a full winter tire. I'm actually leaning towards studless tires right now.

I also would kind of prefer a run-flat tire but looking at TireRack, the only options are the performance winter style.. I'm not so sure they would be the best choice. I deal with mostly snow covered roads, a lot of icy roads as well so I think a full snow tire would be best.

My Pirellis right now are go-flats and luckily I have not had a flat with them. Should I just grab the new Blizzak WS80 and hope for the best? I do keep a tire inflation kit in my trunk from when I had Continental DWs on my car.. that did not end up well though when I hit a pot hole and ended up with a destroyed tire and a tow to the tire shop.

What size(s) are you running for winter?

I would look in to Nokian tyres or Continental. Two of the most test wins around here. I doubt that they offer Run flat though.

Nokian hakkapeliitta r2 http://www.nokiantyres.com/winter-ty...kapeliitta-r2/
Continental http://www.continentaltire.ca/www/tires_ca_en/

I would have recommend ContiVikingContact 6, but it doesn't seem to be available. If you want studded tyres then Hakkapeliitta 8 or Continental Ice Contact.

I know of no non-performance winter run flat tires. Of the 225/45R17 winter run flat tires, the best for snow and ice traction would be the Bridgestone Blizzak LM25RFT and Dunlop Winter Sport 3D DSST.

I've never lived in Alaska, but having driven through multiple winters in MA and NJ on Blizzak's (WS60, WS70, and LM-25), Dunlop Winter Sport's, and Michelin Pilot Alpin's, I went back to Blizzak's for this winter (WS80s).

YMMV,

I have enjoyed my General Altimax Arctics. Pretty comparable to Blizzak WS70's

Thanks for the suggestions. I will rule out all of the performance style winter tires. I'm thinking it will either be something like the new blizzak or Michelin x-ice. Either that or just one of the studded options we have here in town.

We have a lot of different conditions here. It is mostly packed down snow that we deal with here. A few days every winter we will have a thaw/freeze cycle that leaves the roads everywhere basically covered in ice where the studded tires definitely are worth it

I guess I will decide in a few days. I'm really sick of studded tires though I hate the noise and when you do drive on dry pavement everything is terrible about it. Seems like no braking or grip what so ever on pavement
