Our condo building has just agreed to allow 240V charging stations in our individual parking spots. One hurdle down!

I know several people that DD Teslas, costs about $1-$1.50 per day to keep them "filled up".

Unfortunately that list will be long. The Model X already has over 27,000 reservations. I've been trying to find a list to put my name on the Model 3, but sadly Tesla can't accept any deposits for the Model 3 yet.

On a side note: since Tesla had success with using an electric motor in their vehicle (think 0 to 60 of 2.8 in ludicrous mode), and the success of hybrid components in LaF, P1, 918, would it be fair to say that eventually this technology will trickle down into the M3 / M4, and other sports cars?

The i3 I drove would be a great DD. Amazing acceleration, I might even be able to take on a few Ms from stoplight to stoplight.

B U T (and it's a huge one!) the i3 if Fugly!!!!! Toyota can put gas, hybrid, or electric in the same sedan. Why can't BMW accomplish this feat of engineering brilliance????

I think you do not fit the demographic of an M car driver. I bought a 1992 325i automatic, when they came out, strictly because of my commute (2.5hrs each way, in traffic). I traded in my 5sp 1988 325is for it.. and still wish I had that E30.

Compromise for traffic, and you'll forever regret it. Don't give up.

The struggles of a tech nerd, inner nerd says get Tesla Model 3 when it comes out because of technology! If I have the capital in the future then I definitely and most likely would get one as a DD.

For now I can't get my mind off the m4

From my dealings working with the Model S during winter this will occur:

- Range will decrease this same thing occurs with internal combustion engines (you should notice your MPG during winter will not be the same as summer)
- In terms of the heat the vehicle will be able to heat itself much faster than and ICE will so you won't freeze to death if that helps lol

Aside from that never heard of any issues with the rest of the tech in the vehicle. But with all the new tech being introduced such as autonomous driving capabilities its to early to tell.

Yes...short term issues like range are no big deal, happens with gas engines as you said...I'm thinking long term with salt, ice and snow affecting electronics, sensors, etc...will they stand up to all that in a similar way as a regular car...I'm guessing yes since they have done a lot of testing I'm sure, just want to see once some people have been driving them year round for a few years

I drove i3 with the rage extender on an extended (ha!) test drive and all 3 days would run out of juice before reaching home. But otherwise I could totally see myself DD'ing it. So, any electric car with a ~120 miles guaranteed range @ $35k would work for me if it can sit 4 + trunk space and has the usual list of modern options (xenons/navi/etc.)

From what I've been reading on the Model 3 and from Tesla, they expect the Model 3 to carry about a 200 mile range. I'm hoping its more in the 220/230 range, because all of their superchargers are stationed about 200 miles from each other. Obviously your driving style has a huge impact on obtaining that number. I don't expect many people to be "gunning" it in a Model 3 but then again I've seen folk in the Prius tailgating, cutting people off, and driving over 90mph in it. I've even seen a Smart Car with tints and rims that was using the emergency lane to pass people.

It's not just gunning, but also driving @ highway speeds. The said i3 range drops like 50% faster @ 75MPH compared to urban driving. Actually, I think this was the problem in my case, as at least half of my daily commute is highway.

What I also learned from this experience is you really need Level 2 @ home (or access to supercharger/level 2 at work), as level 1 (= regular 110V) is painfully slow and insufficient for an overnight charging. Model 3 would probably need 20-24 hrs to fully charge from a household outlet.

Don't see enough of a benefit of this over a Volt. Volt requires a tiny amount of maintenance (rarely using the engine) but would let me go where I want, when I want, and if I forget to plug it in overnight I can still get to work the next day. Never worrying about range, where to refuel or how long it will take. Money savings on fuel for the Tesla would be tiny. Then I can buy it locally (many can't with the Tesla), get it fixed in any decent sized town.

The idea of using superchargers to get from place to place would be a last resort or emergency. The idea of one place in most large cities to "refuel" and then it taking 30 minutes to do it would have me not going. So the network doubles and now there are two places in large cities to refuel, still close to no chance on it being convenient.
