Cabin Air Filter
Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and in need of a little assistance.
Just recently purchased a "new" 2017 X1 dealer demo and I need to change out the cabin air filter.. She had 7200+ miles when I got her and now she has 15K. Any idea where the filter is located and if tools are needed to change? Please advise. All perspectives are welcome. Thanks! |

Give me BMW's under the hood cabin filter any day!...A few screws...pop off the cover, slap in the new filter right under your nose...put the cover back on..you're done....And you can set a beer on the engine to refresh you while you work!...Plus you don't have to hit the whirlpool to work the kinks out after every filter change! |

I need help Please
I just purchased a 2016 X1 and I am trying to find the location of the In-cabin micro-filter. I see the post of how to get into the housing location but where is it located? Someone please help. Is it located under the hood or inside the car under the glove compartment?

Pretty easy to do once you get the panels off. For USA it's on the passenger side.
Use care when removing panels as I broke a clip when pulling the panel that goes against the center console off. (you can see the clip on the seat in my attached pic). Luckily there is a fastener near where the clip broke so there are no rattles. |

Doesn't a US X1 come with 3yrs/36k miles maintenance that includes cabin filter replacement? Why not check with the dealer to see if it's still under maintenance warranty?

You are correct, I just looked. I took the dealers word for it when I took the X1 in for service.
I should clarify, bmw will not replace the cabin filter (at no charge) until the car says its time. For F48 it's apparently the second oil change? Which is 20K miles. Our F48 is already 1.5 years old with approx 15K+ miles and I wanted to replace it at 1 year and the dealer wouldn't do it unless I paid extra. So I bought the filters myself and did it myself. As per usual don't trust the dealers. |

The other cover (black) is what the inside of the panel that is under the glove box looks like; it also has to be removed. Tells us more about the USB upgrade and cable option. That's new to me.

How did you guys manage to get the retaining clamp off? I tried prying with screw drivers but no luck...

What retaining clamp? If you're referring to the door flap that covers the 2 filters, you can remove it completely to get more room. Once you unlatch it you have to push upwards and it'll pop off the hinges. If you're talking about the trim piece that covers the air filter area, it pops off once you remove the screw. Just need to pull outwards.

how to
adding to Knightarmor's guide.
I'm adding some more detailed info/pics. This was one of the more painful cabin air filter replacement's I've done. Why they put it in such an obscure place with no space to even open the door/flap completely is beyond me. I come from japanese cars and they are literally one or two screws/clips from accessing the cabin filter. This 2016 X1 is my first german car just learning their engineering design... Here goes: Tools you need: 1x 8mm socket/ratchet 1x T2 driver You're gonna take off this rectangular cover with a 12v outlet held by an 8mm nut on each side. Then it should easily fall out from the two tabs in the back Remove all connectors and 12v harness clip. Remove the T2 screw holding the side kick panel. I removed the foot vent piping as well to get more space back there. If you can wiggle your way without it... good luck. This also requires removing the hidden T2 screw: Then follow the piping up the back and pull it out from the connection. No pic cuz it's impossible to get back up there. Just feel for it and it should pop out easily. Open the cabin filter door clip Remove the filters and take note of the air flow direction: Once you pull the first one out, second one needs to be lift up and pulled out by the small flap on the filter. Put new filters in the same air flow direction. Mine look mangled because I had to shove it in the small door opening that BMW decided to cram in that space. Put back panels/vents the backwards order you pulled them. Total time spent: ~30min. |
