Audio silent in the cold

Got in the X2 this morning with the temperature at +2F, everything seemed fine but I was wondering why the seatbelt reminder didn't chime. And then, why the radio wasn't on.

Turns out, everything was fine except for the sound output. It stayed silent the entire 25 minute drive, although the outside temperature didn't change much. Coming back to the car 45 minutes later (+6F), the sound was back, until the next stop (+7F) when it cut back out.

Not looking forward to the useless "no problem found" that I'm expecting from the service trip.

Anyone else have this happen?

Do you have base or highest speakers?

Base US-spec audio, meaning "HiFi". I suspect the amplifier unit, personally.

Back when I had a high power system I always enjoyed the extra power the cold seemed to give, hated the extra rattles.

I have the base ones as well US-Spec model. I haven't had that issue. I love in a more humid environment but still have not had that issue.

To be fair though, if it gets down to 2f in Florida we have bigger issues than if your stereo works!

TMT - did you end up resolving this? I'm curious as I would have thought these cars would work even in 2F (not that I can even dream of that temperature downunder...esp not on a day when we're expecting 110F)

I have a service appointment Monday and this is on the list. It has happened only twice so I am not too optimistic about the solution.

Bluetooth is an interesting idea. But the car doesn't use the phone as output, rather the opposite. And I have not changed any settings or connection. Will think about that.

Asked the dealer to look into this, along with a couple of other early issues. Predictably, they say they can't do anything. There were no relevant codes, and basically nothing to go on apart from the silence.

If it's caused by the cold, there won't be many opportunities to reproduce it coming up. If it's something else, my plan is to whip out the phone and take a video of the situation, including demonstrating the silence, the various iDrive settings, etc. But it wasn't operator error.

Folks,

I've also had this issue on a 2019 X2 M35i.

Happened after washing the car actually. Was all fine, washed the car, then it acted up. I would of had my phone on me (out of the car) while washing.

Turning the car off and on didn't do anything.
Driving for ~15 minutes didn't do anything.

** Turned the car off at home, walked away for ~2 hours. Problem was fixed... **

I think it has to do with the fact that walking away got me out of Bluetooth range?

Hasn't happened since.

Cheers.

Sounds like an amp or head unit problem although leaning towards amp as the seat belt chime wouldn't route thru the head unit. These intermittent problems are a PITA to replicate.

This actually did reoccur for me back in June, on a perfectly mild day, and I did grab a video. But, it has not happened since. I agree it appears to be an output issue, and definitely not bluetooth, since all sound is gone including warning chimes.

Now that someone else has seen it, I'm maybe more motivated. PhadeOut, is yours the standard or HK system?

I haven't seen this issue for me. This morning, it was about -7 Celsius here (19F).

I am surprised that you guys in Massachusetts are colder than in Montreal... +2F is like -16 Celsius. That's cold for November!

Now that this thread is revived.. I completely forgot to say.. this happened to me sort of. It was during the summer COVID but I went to pick someone up local and couldn't figure out why my phone was silent so I just flipped it off bluetooth and spoke on the phone. After when I stopped the car I noticed no sound from the radio, also no warning chimes. I turned on and off the car with no luck. Then I thought maybe I coded something out or something screwed up (I probably had coded something a day or two before with bimmercode). I was loading up the car and heard a little scratch through the speakers, and then a warning chime went off. So the car might have "timed out" and reset something. Certainly even if you turn on and off the car the actual system stays dormant until it "goes to sleep" 10-15 minutes later so that might have been it. I have never had that happen again either no matter the weather.

That would be because that post is from late January, and +2F isn't totally unexpected at the end of January here

Oups. I didn't see the date of the first post. I thought this thread was recent. It explains the temperature. Sorry for being confused

I was going to add the same...I had the issue, once after washing the car. Halloween weekend. Irritating, because I'd left the self wash, went home, finished my detail, then headed out with my son to a tour of AT&T Stadium and it was dead silent, so I couldn't even hear the GPS or Google Maps. Couple hours later after the tour, everything was back up and running for the drive home. Hasn't happened since, and I wash the car every weekend.

I had this issue a couple months ago. I believe it to be a software issue, as mine had just ran a update.

My car had the same issue. I turned the car on a pushed a the update, after that the car had no sound. I turned the car off and when in the office to research, and found nothing. I went back out to mess with the settings and it worked. I think that after the computer rebooted it cleared it.

ASD amp issue, maybe you can check it.

My friend also had this issue, no sound came from speaker.

So we did a test on headunit, Chang HU to test. But still no sound.
