This is the car that they're killing the wagon for? I much rather take the wagon. Better utility, lower frame, and track eligible. I love watching my wife pass people on track in her wagon.

I’m interested in this to replace my X1. The M2 is for fun, the X2 for practical purposes. I like the additional height for the freeway and room for bike and gear. I simply like smaller vehicles so I’m not interested in bigger SUVs.

Why trash the X2 if you are not interested in it? I am not interested in most of BMW’s lineup but it doesn’t bother me that BMW sells them. More choice is good.

Waiting for the real world reviews. This car may very well be a sleeper. Lots of content.

I believe the price difference is about $8k-$10k. Not quite the "same price".

This car seems to be more in line with the Golf R. It's AWD, more power than the R, and even a front LSD. 0-60 is under 5 seconds.

Also, you seemed to have done quite a bit of rounding. The X2 seems to start at around $45-$46k. The R starts at around $40k last time I checked.
Same price the OG M2.

Close enough.
Not really. :

It should be noted that the X2 M35i is the top version of the X2. The X2 series actually starts at $36,400. So it's disingenuous to be comparing a mid range VW Golf GTI with the highest end X2 M35i.

My "not really" wasn't price related but related to the calendar, and product availability. To say that a last gen M2 that isn't current model (and thus not using current pricing) is a flawed reference. Let's stay comparing 2019 model year vehicles.

I always find the hate a little interesting. This is not a car for me but I am always in favor of being given as many choices as possible. This is a niche car like much of what BMW builds, the profit made from these cars helps to support the full variety of products on offer.

They should put this engine in the 330i and the i8 with the same electric front drive.

The $ isn't that bad if you take into account what is now standard in the X2 M35 versus the regular X2 28i

It all comes down to how sweet BMWFS makes the leases...

The existence of the X2 M35i doesn't negate your M2, or any other non-similar vehicle you may have or want. The X2 M35i is priced similar to "actually comparable" vehicles from Benz (upcoming GLA35) and Audi (upcoming SQ3). That's what matters.
that's not his point. his point is the 4 cylinder non-M car is now the same price as the 6 cylinder M car. as an M2 owner I either got a great deal on my M2 or these BMWs are getting really expensive.

You need to get over the cylinder mindset, its the highest output 4 they have made to date. There is zero comparison about the M2 and X2M35i, the fact that the prices are close is meaningless. The M2 is great for what it is, and the X2M35i will be great at what it is.

I actually think the X2 itself is a great looking and practical car. I would get one if I can afford it. The M35i that is. But I already have the F80 M3 and still paying for it. So no car for me yet.

If we're venturing away from direct competitors; I think it's helpful to just compare the pricing of all the different M Performance models.

When is the X1 M35i variant coming? That's the sensible one I want to test drive for my wife's soccer car/around town use.

I suppose I view the comparisons in this thread a bit differently.

I find the M35i to be priced about right. It's main competitors are the MB GLA 45 AMG, Audi's refreshed Q3 for 2019 & to a lesser extent, Porsche's Macan Sport Edition (4 cyl.) for 2019.

In the above group, I consider the M35i to be the best compromise of the three, supra.

I would never cross shop the X2 vs the M2. Apples & oranges here...

If I'm cross shopping sporty SAVs w/AWD, I'm only looking at the aforementioned SAVs, period; hence, the X2 M35i is the clear winner in my eyes. Not interested in anything Japanese (boring sewing machines), American (boring appliances) or British (questionable reliability)... This is just my view. YMMV!

The GTI is a great hatch (owned two)... The R is an even greater hatchback! They are not a direct competitor to an SAV, however.

If price was an issue/concern, and I wanted a pseudo SAV w/AWD, I'd shop VW Golf R.

Price no object in the small AWD SAV arena, it's the MB GLA 45 AMG. The best bang for the buck is the BMW X2 M35i. This is how I see it. YMMV

Cheers/B
