They are dynamic. Which is cool.

Kinda goes back around to the original point. Seems like an elegant solution to the airflow question instead of making the front of the car look like an open mouthed bass. And again, if the engine needed that much cooling/airflow, they would not have used a design the can close and open. It would just be open.

Seems appropriate most are commenting on the appearance of the 2-series, as that is what has apparently been revealed. As with most, I am not a fan of the base 2-series, or any base BMW model for that matter.

The above stated, I do not think many, if any, commenting on this sub-forum are looking to purchase a base 2-series. As I have been saying, BMW will 'menace it up' into a proper ///M car for the M2/M2C.

The base engine will be replaced with S58; the hideous one-piece/plastic kidney grille will get opened up to let the S58 breath; proper ///M parts will be added . . . just let it play out a bit and I think everyone will be pleased with the G87 M2/M2C.

You might be correct, as 'M' gets plastered on everything these days.

So let me rephrase. . . whatever it is, it's not G87 M2/M2C and does not interest ME.

I truly believe the G87 M2/M2C will build upon what the F87 started.

Yeah, there's no chance of that happening.

BMWs are getting bigger, heavier, and more technologically dependent.

The F8X actually lost weight over the E9x. I'm predicting the G8x will be even heavier that the E9x.

The G-series M2 will unfortunately continue with that theme.

BMW already had their chance with the current M2CS.
Agreed.
I believe G8X will be heavier too, just because of the increasing dimensions.
Having said that, BMW might try to lighten the chassis, which they could not do with the M2CS, and so when they strengthen it, they counter-acted the lightening measures. No chance of changing to a lighter chassis... which they might be able to do on the next one.

My fingers are crossed for a lighter, more powerful G80. But I'm not holding my breath on the weight issue.
Plus I'm disappointed with the ever increasing dimensions!
I'm always wondering that people expect new car generations to become lighter, these times are gone long time ago.
We won't see any new cars that will be lighter than the previous generation (except for supercars, but even they get heavier), just because of all the tech / luxury people expect to have and all the safety things that have to go into them, this is why the cars are getting bigger and bigger, not because the manufacturer wants to give you more space (which also almost never happens, even if cars get bigger), but because they have to incorporate all the tech & safety features....this costs space and weight...

I agree with you, the M2 will for sure look better, but what concerns me and a lot of others here are the head & rear light designs...and the M cars always have the same lights as the „base" cars as far as I know...

Seriously, i've had 5 generations (E30,E36,E46,E90 and F30) of the 3 series, at this rate i'm pulling my streak of 18 BMW the last 2.5 decade.

I believe the theory is, unless you can afford the 8 Series you do not deserve a good looking car.

I hear you . . . there are certain things that I simply cannot look past, e.g., G80/G82 front grille and fact they are simply HUGE.

That said, I do not find the headlights and taillights to be that off-putting. . . although I will admit I do like the F87 headlights better than what I am seeing on the current pics of the 2-series.

As far as size and weight goes, I realize there are regulatory challenges all manufacturers face . . . however, modern cars do not have to be bigger and, hence, heavier.

BMW could most assuredly meet all the 'requirements' without making all of their chassis so large/heavy. I mean, my 718 CGTS tics all the regulation boxes and Porsche has not had to make it into a small tank to do so.

At any rate, as you also state, BMW appears to represent a one-way street these days and they would much rather build bigger engines to motor their small tanks than to build smaller chassis.

Honestly, the F87 has reached my size/weight threshold when it comes to interest in BMW offerings. The ONE thing BMW can do to have me completely abandon interest in their brand is add a couple hundred more pounds to the G87.

So for me, driving dynamics is probably the most important thing about a car. My first BMW I got almost by accident. I'd owned an Acura Integra GSR and it had a lot of the characteristics I liked - a small-ish nimble car that was fun to drive. When it was time to replace, I couldn't find any Coupes at the Acura dealer, they had stopped making them, but they did have a CPO 330Ci ZHP there that I took on a test drive on a whim. I was hooked. I'd stumbled on to perhaps one of the best driving cars ever made. And it didn't hurt that it looked drop dead gorgeous.

I kept the E46 quite a while because I hated the E92 generation. Felt bloated, the first gen of the electronic steering was dreadful and I didn't care for the styling. It wasn't until I found the M240i that I was willing to get a new one. It really was almost perfect, for me at least. The steering still isn't as good as the old hydraulic, but does seem better than their first try.

During a servicing, they gave me one of the new 3s as a loaner and I have to say that I did think it was a vast improvement over the last couple of 3/4 generations. It did make me think that a new 2 series based on CLAR might not be such a bad thing ... IF they didn't bleep it all up like they did the 4.

Now that we are actually getting some better hints, so far I have to say:

Pros:

Remaining RWD. Thanks the Gods.
CLAR is a better chassis overall so should have better handling dynamics.
The overall body style doesn't look bad.
Looks like it won't have the same sort of gods awful grill the 4er has - that would have been a deal breaker.

Cons:

As folks mentioned, the front air vents (if the photos are real) look really bad.
I hate tail pipes that aren't round.
It will have the awful new digital dash (but we knew it would).

Don't know yet.

Will the M sport (M240i replacement) get a B58 or just the B48? Having the newer B58 would be nice.
And will the M240 get a manual transmission?

My ideal would be M240i with B58 and manual. My guess would be that the B58 is possible, but the manual will likely be reserved for just the M2.

I've heard it mentioned that perhaps by the time they get to a LCI refresh they might fix some of the problems. Those refreshes often will make changes to the front and rear. I'm also hoping that all the negative feedback about the digital dash will spur some clean up and improvements there. I'm not looking to replace my M240i anytime soon so perhaps by then some of the problems would be fixed.
