Sos system failure

I am getting this message once in a while. Sos system failure. I just visited the dealer, they told me the sos back up battery is dead. It has to be replaced. Total cost €600,- they say its the roof battery, so they have to take the whole roof liner out....

Car is 3 years old en one month out of warranty. They are going to give bmw a call to see if some warranty will cover this. I sure hope so, otherwise this will be my last bmw. Already had too many costs with this car

Sorry to read your bad news, please share outcome of contact with BMW. It will be interesting to read if this will be a regular issue or a one-off. Anyone else have this problem?

Google 'BMW SOS system failure' and get ready for a phone book of results to comb through. Feel free to pressure BMW to deal with it. If you reach the end of your rope on that path, here's the fix. Trust me, it's the only fix.

Yes, it comes and goes. But it goes just like 1 in ten days. I also have another problem, the weather app is a lot of the time offline in the main menu. It just says 'no connection' but when i select it from the menu it works fine, when i go back to the main menu all of a sudden its there. This is from the same TCM box as the faulty battery. So maybe the whole box is broken?

Read above. Enter in that thread and you'll find how to code it out by using BimmerCode

Thank you for this. I've had this situation for the last couple of months. In my case it was because I changed the headlight bulbs to LEDs. I coded them, but there was some kind of interference. I followed this fix, and it worked.

Glad I could help. It's not inherent to X1s, it's all BMWs. I had the issue awhile back and pulled my hair out for days before finally stumbling onto that thread...had a feeling it was something I should have bookmarked.

In order to save people looking, here is coding fix using Bimmercode. Please note, done at your own risk. Use a Bluetooth dongle not wireless to reduce risk of error.

Open the Bimmercode app and go to Instrument Cluster/Expert Mode/3301 CC_ID_Sperre/CC_ACTIVIERUNG_5/Custom Value. You should see 'FF' listed in Bytes 0 to 7. Scroll to Byte 5 and change it from FF to F7 and press 'Done'.

In Bimmercode you can use expert mode search function to find location.

I had the same issue. When bought my connected drive app to remotely access my car for locking and unlocking.
So if u recently bought connected drive membership go to drive setting and press the data transfer button, its gonna take a couple of minutes but worked for me.
Yours might be different but worth trying.

Fix for SOS System Failure

There are so many reports of this problem on all BMWs and as dealerships are quoting mad money to fix it (I was quoted £800 to sort the problem) that there is now a a BMW specialist here in UK who are offering a fix it for a quarter of the cost.
I am sure I am like the majority of the owners/posters with this problem in that the problem starts with the SOS warning activating intermittently initially(I had periods when it stayed off for a week then came back again).
90% of the time the problem is down to the battery in the Telematics unit which seems to fail around 3-5 years from new. The genuine battery is around £50-60 here in uk, already expensive for a tiny battery the size of a matchbox but the majority of the costs are labour as in a lot of cases (definitely in an X1) the whole headliner needs removing as the Telematic unit is located under sharks fin aerial in roof!!!
This is one of a number of problems I have experienced and the car is becoming a money pit so I reckon it will be gone pretty soon!
Please contact me if you are in uk and need details of BMW specialist who is doing the cheap fix.

Xtra1, I am having the same issue. Do you recommend a BMW Specialist in the Merseyside area that could do this fix? Cheers.

Best of luck with that-if there's a battery involved warranty will say NO!.
(that was my experience with UK BMW approved warranty claim for this)
