Blowing smoke on cold start?
Hi all,
Can anyone advise if the smoke coming out of my exhaust is an issue? I have a feeling it is, please see video below. This only happens when i start the car for the start of the day. Subsequent restarts have no smoke. I also notice more smoke comes out when the car is not driven for longer periods. So more smoke would come out if car not used over 2+ days. No smoke comes out at any other times. Only at cold starts. BMW wants 300-400$ to diagnose but wanted to see if anyone has experience this. The car is 4 years old. Petrol or Diesel engine?
I found, when I had various Diesel engine cars, that if I used supermarket fuel it would blow out more smoke from the exhaust both when cold and on accelerating. It was actually rather embarrassing, but immediately noticeable how much difference there was on changing to proprietary brand fuel, which didn’t emit clouds of black smoke. I haven’t seen any problem with petrol, although I’m currently using Shell V-power petrol to try and judge if that results in improved fuel consumption. As things stand, after a couple of tank fills, I’m not altogether convinced the additional cost at the pump is worth it. |

Is it a petrol or diesel vehicle?
Have you had the vehicle since new? How long has it been exhibiting this problem? Do you know the complete history of it and the oil changes? As well as the possibility of a problem with oil leaking from the turbo (stated above) and being burnt, there is also the remote possibility of piston ring wear/breakage or even cylinder bore wear, where oil leaks into the cylinders and gets burnt. With respect to the previous poster, Supermarket fuel comes from the same refinery as others do and MUST adhere to the same high standards, and should be discounted as being a contributor to the problem.

You should go back to the dealership and make them aware of your observation.

Hello!
I have exactly the same symptoms in my 2016 X1 with 2.0i B48 engine. There is white/blue smoke for 5-10 seconds after cold start. In addition, the engine runs unevenly. After few seconds everything is gone and works perfect until the next day. Did you solve this problem? or maybe someone knows what is wrong? |

Did you ever get this sorted or figure out the problem?
That certainly looks like white/blue smoke which could be oil or coolant, and not gas or water steam. What was the major service you had before this started happening |

Reviewing the video again, there is no doubt that it is burnt oil. As previously suggested it could be overfilling. This type of behaviour is also synonymous with oil leaking through the turbo, or past the piston rings.
Because it will not do it until the next day/morning, I would suggest you post the video to your dealer, or leave the car overnight with the dealer, but, make sure it is not started until you are present. Definitely not cold air/condensation trait.

Burnt oil IS normally blue smoke. Unburnt diesel (or severe over fuelling on gasoline engines) is black. White smoke is normally coolant or condensation in very cold weather.

I have the same engine (B48) same problem. It doesn't happen every morning. It has to stay 2-3 days and then it does. Definitely oil burnt. I had to fill up with 1 litre.

When you say it has to stay 2-3 days, do you mean the engine has not started in that time?

In this case it seems likely that there is some kind of slow oil leakage into the induction side of the system. Possibly from the Turbo.
