I agree with you, one has to wait to taste what they've cooked; one cannot judge the soup before it's done.
I'm just thinking aloud, based on the past performance, what is likely. The current Mercedes A class (FWD) platform cars are real trash to drive and still the A class is among the top ten most sold cars in UK! The Consumer Reports announced that the GLA is the LEAST satisfying car in America; yet the people buy it in droves.
So, it is not that the market for cars with a luxury badge is rational.

As for Audi, I don't find those cars very appealing.

Obviously this forum has some of the worlds best designers, engineers and corporate directors- while others just express their personal opinion.

Since my previous favourit brand went down the tube, I had to look otherwise.

Looking for: I6, good AWD, good AUTO, good handling and decent looks, I opted for X4.
After lowering 35mm and installing M Performance exhaust, I am a happy camper.

I am now looking for a replacement within a couple of years. After monitoring currently introduced vehicles, and vehicles to come, I have set my sight on X2 M35i. "My" SA has seen X2 in real, and promise me it is better then on pictures.

X2 is, to my mind, a modern version of the traditional British Shooting Brake, which I like, and also meets my needs, even if a 4 pot is a bit of a downgrade - but I am previously used to it. I am counting on 300+bhp.

Current presentad versions are - in my opinion - "a little light". I hope that the upcoming M35i, will have more "presence" - and horses

You’d be better off with the Macan! A head to head test I saw recently tested the X4 first and said it was brilliant, but then when the tester got in the Macan he couldn’t believe it was even better to drive (well it is a Porsche) I guess you’ll save money with an X2 although an M35i version will probably be close in price to the 4 pot Macan, and I know which I’d take without a doubt!

I am fully aware of Macan, but - like F-Pace - it needs a V-6 to be a "full" vehicle, while X2 in the shape of M35i, will be a "full" car in its own right. There is a significant weight difference X2 vs. Macan/F-Pace - even if F-Pace has al. chassis/body.

I might be disappointed, when seeing and testdriving X2/ X2 M35i, but then I will sort out a new vehicle, which might be facelifted Macan/F-Pace, but with V-6 - even if price is a bit stiff. I might even consider a Volvo XC 60 Polestar - yet to be released.

From the enthusiasts perspective, yes, this car doesn't make sense. But enthusiasts are not the entire market, and this car isn't geared towards them.

This car is going to sell well because that's where the market is. Every brand is making these "crossovers" and they are selling.

From my perspective, if they need to sell these cars to keep cool ones like the M2 around (with stick!) then whatever.

cwulffy: beware, there is such thing as ageing, and that will also hit - sooner or later - car enthuisasts/freak/nuts. Then you will not:
-spend Sundays driving on race tracks
-crawl out of a car at sidewalk level

You will also realise that you have done your share of the possible 10 million clutch operations, and opt for a vehicle with AUTO and SPORT modes, where you can have your beloved stick, but don´t need to operate the clutch. BMW with help of ZF sells these type of vehicles.
You will also like the added height - if opting for the dreaded High Rise -for better view of the lunatics that are driving around you.

I am at that age, and my first High Rise was current X4, with all performance goodies, but no electronic shit.

I was disapointed about steering precision and genaral handling, but after lowering, it´s okay - even if chassis comfort is a bit worse. Since then X4 M40i, has come out, and I recommend a testdrive to compare your current vehicle.

I am counting on M department to do their magic also on X2 M35i, or else I will not buy.

As a former owner of two Porsche's and many BMW I agree that the driving dynamics of ANY Porsche are superior to ANY equivalent current-production BMW. BUT, of late, I've been buying BMW because of the "free" 3 years of regular maintenance. With a "minor" maintenance of about $400 and a "major" maintenance of about $1000 every two years for Porsche, that adds up to almost a $2K difference in favor of the BMW and tips the balance for me. In the early 2000's, I bought M-B, but when they dropped their included maintenance, I left for Porsche and BMW. Incidentally, at a meeting of the local M-B Club shortly after M-B dropped the "free" maintenance, I asked one of the local dealer's Service Manager "why". He said it was the struggle to keep good techs that drove it. The lower reimbursement rate for the included service work really upset the mechanics and they would leave for other make dealers to make more money. I wonder how BMW is managing this?

I’m not sure, but here in the uk we don’t get free maintenance unless we buy an optional package... maybe it’s included in the price in the US or maybe discounts aren’t as big!!

I don´t know - but can take a guess, with limited experience. I come from the SAAB World, and to start with hourly rates for shops are about 50% higher.

I was - slightly - disappointed with steering precision/handling on my X4 - all performance goodies/20" wheels- so I bought H&R springs directly from Germany. Dealer wanted 8 hours at SEK 1200/hour=SEK 9600 - $1000 - £800 to swap. Independent shop did it for 4 hours at 800/hour=SEK 3200.

My electrically operated BMW towhook stopped working. Dealer told me it was a software error - reprogramming would cure it. Reprogramming was free, but dealer still charged SEK 1000 for hooking up instrument! I.e. BMW knew they had made a programming error with towhook, but neglected to make a recall!

With this attitude there should be a lot of "easy money" also for mechanics.

I have no doubt that this X2 will sell. Just like the X4 and X6 (when it came out). These even numbered Xs are lifestyle vehicles. The consumer demographics that want some sort of practicality but do not want to be associated to the suburban boxy hatched SUVs.
You know those vegan DINKs that wear lululemon while lining up for their soy lattes. Probably owns a small dog and shops at Pottery Barn. Often seen at pillates/yoga venues as opposed to Hockey rinks.

The current FWD-based X1 has become way too vanilla.

$38K? I leased my daughter a 2017 Kia Sportage that, for the most part, looks similiar but more like a mini-Cayenne. The Kia is bigger, longer warranty, 15K cheaper (to buy), has less power in LX form but more in EX but weighs less. Rear seats recline and has a 5-Star NHSTA safety rating. While I'm sure the badge would have made her happy, she's loving the little Kia. If BMW puts a killer lease deal on the X2, they might move them but as far as sales go....hmmm....

Not sure why there is so much hate for this? Its a younger fresh design, and overall seems like a quality unit. Not every model has to be for every person, and that doesnt damage the brand to show some diversity. Not everything needs to be a high performance model, or be a tribute to tradition etc. Sometimes you need to just get groceries or cruise around town, appreciate a little more interior space and clearance than a standard hatch, and dont mind some modern styling compared to the often too minor model updates.
