Does this estimate for front brakes seem reasonable?

Just had oil change done at 28,300 miles and front brakes will need to be replaced in a few thousand miles more.

I am excluding labor and taxes as that varies drastically.

I got a very similar parts estimate from my local dealer. I wanted to give them the parts business although I planned to do the job myself. I ended up getting the parts online from a different bmw dealer. Here is the invoice:

Had my front pads replaced around 24k miles. No rotors. It was covered under new car maintenance plan.

I’m at 50k now and front pads are almost gone. I bought new pads and sensor for just over $100. Waiting to do the swap when I change over to my winter setup.

Not sure why you need rotors this early.


Dealership just did my rear pads, rotors and sensor for $570.

If you want to do it yourself, you should hopefully only need pads unless you warped your rotors ?

In previous cars I usually replaced both rotors and pads so I do not see this as an issue.

I just had the rears done earlier this year under the maintenance program that came with the car, but they only replaced the pads not the rotors. Which I thought was strange or a cost saving measure on BMW's part to not incur additional costs for their maintenance program.

Unfortunately the maintenance program that came with the car expired a few months ago. I got a quote for extending the maintenance program but it didn't seem cost effective based on the 1, 2, and 3 year extensions.

That does seem a little excessive..

You do get a lot of hardware included in many cases with other pieces.. ie rattle clips come with the pads, but you can always reuse them. I hate the bolt for the rotor.. not sure of the hex screw.

FCP Euro which is where most people order stuff have each front rotor listed as $220 a piece, the pads for front is $84..

So we are talking at sub $500 for parts.

The brake wear sensor you can always reuse unless you trip them (ie wear it down to the metal). But this is also cheap.

JMC's list is perfect.. but also don't be afraid of going outside the box.

Ie I got myself some ceramic pads for $50 and rotors are always your choice from other vendors. I tend to like the rice of slotted and dimpled/drilled, although if you plan on tracking it they aren't usually allowed unless it's stock or part of a big brake kit.

Seems like the dealership quote is almost double the amount for parts.

I am definitely going to see what parts would be from bimmer world or fcp euro. There are a few BMW specialty shops in my area that I am sure could do the labor.

I do have warranty (not service plan) through 2026, would that affect my ability to do anything aftermarket?

This is one of those... prove that the parts caused the damage. So if your engine blows.. no.. if your brakes failed or the rotor cracked.. then nope (but then in this case it's not even their part anyways).

All goes back to the first case where you need to prove that you didn't use oem windshield wipers and they tried to deny a warranty.. nope that's not possible.
