Locking wheel nuts!

What are you using instead of the standard bmw locking nuts?.Have a set of MV3's and want something a bit more effective as I'm hearing more and more recent stories of 'skeleton' keys being in circulation.
Research is pushing me towards McGard ultras,but I cant find any recent reviews.Any thoughts?Any alternatives?Any deals out there?

Its not worth it imo, if someone really wants your wheels any lock nut will just them down. I just deal with it.

That was a quick reply!!!
I know what youre saying though,but it looks like one of my lockers is starting to wear and I dont want the ball ache when I really need to get the nuts off,so to speak!.
Had a set like the ultras (rotating heads) on my scoob and had no issues whatsoever.
Car is always garaged,so its just to put the average chancer off,when parked elsewhere

Ive got BMW to put on an extra two mcgaurd locking wheel nuts per wheel on top of the BMW locking wheel nuts on my new e92 (mar 2011). I agree if someone really wants ur wheels away they will probably get them, but it is more difficult and more time consuming to get a locking wheel nut off than a standard lock so im hoping they will look at mine with three locking nuts on each wheel and think nah we will find an easier target.

From my research Mcgaurd seem to be generally the recommended route to take.

Mcgard ultras are highly recommended, I've got a set of those plus the standard BMW ones fitted to mine.

Didn't think they did them with the black spinny thing for 3 series! Ultras are part number 27179SL (with a silver spinny thing)?

One standard and one MG one for me, too. They seem to be the most highly regarded locking nut.

As said, there's always a way to rob anything, the point is to make it harder than the car you're parked next to! That way it saves you having to 'just deal with it'

You could really buy any decent ones. The uspide is that when you sell the car, you can take them off.

The problem with forums is that if one person loses his wheels, the entire community thinks that it's the norm and becomes paranoid - me included. I have a set of McGuards in addition to the BMW locking nuts and I have only got 17" wheels.

I recently had a tyre repaired and the owner of the place said that "people don't steal alloys any more, unless they are very specialised wheels."

That's what I thought too. Do they now do ultras in black?

Also, you guys with more than one lock-nut per wheel. I hope for your sake that you don't lose/leave a key at home when it's needed elsewhere!!!

If you go to a BMW dealers, they have the Black Mcgard's specially made for BMW.

They are £32 a set and have BMW packaging & part number.

Although the factory don't fit them, they are the official spare parts.

McGard BMW locks:

I didn't think the black BMW supplied McGards are of the "Ultra" variety which have the spinning collar.

The only Ultra ones I have seen are silver.

Not sure, but they are a damn site better than the OE splined locks.

The Mcgard / BMW locks are all unique with a unique ID code card inside just like regular Mcgards, so you can't buy them all up like you can with the splined keys.

Yeah I got them to fit the BMW Mcgaurd black ones think was £35 fitted a set, didnt fancy having a few silver ones when the rest of the nuts are black on the 313's.

If you loose the key, just like the people that nick them no locking wheel nut is impossible to get off.

I think with BMW its more important after the thing with the cracked wheels it means there is more of a demand for BMW wheels esp the 19" ones hence why im being extra cautious, would rather pay £70 and get few extra wheel nuts than have to fork out for insurance claim and all that goes with it and not to meantion the hastle. So for me is more piece of mind.

If the BMW ones are only £32, that's cheaper than Halfrauds. I paid about £36 from there. IMO, for £32 it's a no-brainer.

Also, mine came with a set of serial numbers on the instruction book, so I guess that if you lose a locking wheel nut you can get a replacement.

No, but doing it quietly is very difficult without the key

Attacking a car with a rotary impact driver and lump hammer at 4am might get noticed!!

Just checked - The BMW Mcgard's are not 'ultimate', but the clearance between the bolt head (which is very wide) and the walls of the recess in the wheel is only 2mm or less so there's not enough room to force a large socket over the head of the Mcgard.

Agree with doughboy, think the point is locking wheel nuts dont stop a determined tooled up theif, they can stop the optomist... What they do though is make the scum think twice as you say it makes a lot of noise, and also takes more time.

I know McGard have more (although not infinite?) codes/patterns; I was talking about the BMW OEM ones, of which they only show 10 different adaptors on realoem.com. Quite scary really.

Neither did I actually but some kind chap off this forum bought them from BMW apparently and I then bought them off him. Deffo McGaurd in Ultra spec with spinny collar, However apparently the BMW black ones have less key patterns than the silver ones from McGuard. I gave them a freshen up with some satin black when I got them as they had one or 2 chips, I dare say you could do the same with the silver finished ones.
