X1 xDrive 25i (28i) - Sunset Orange [Journal]
I thought I wanted to share my car and the thoughts I have put into it when I ordered it with all of you. I had an F30 335i with all options and additional addons but I also have back pains due to Osteochondrosis in my lower spine. Already years ago I knew that the time would come were I needed a car with some height for an easier entry/exit and that every aspect of the car had to be chosen due to my back.
More than two years ago I started looking at taller cars and that’s where I looked at the X1 for the very first time. Back then I “forgot” all about it again because I wasn’t ready to get rid of my F30. About a year later I realized that if I wanted to get a bit of pain relieve I had to change the car so I started looking at the X1 again. About half a year ago I started to look at all options in the market (from Kia to Mercedes) and luckily the best option for a future car was still a BMW. My only “problem” was that I am a total petrol head probably having had the best equipped F30 in Denmark, so getting a FWD based people carrier in the form of an X1 was not the most desired car from my side (especially not since my wife has a lovely M240i). So what to do? I knew the X1 could not be a F30 in disguise but I decided that I wanted to build an X1 that I found cool and that I could be enthusiastic about so I could keep my car as my hobby. Drivetrain Coming from a F30 335i with MPPK the engine had to be as big as possible and since it is named X1 I thought it had to have xDrive. xDrive and automatic is a part of the package here if you chose the 25i but I also added the sport transmission. Visual decisions I wanted an X1 that was different from all the other X1s on the road. I didn’t want any of the 50 shades of gray (or gray look a likes) BMW offers so I was left with Misano Blue and Sunset Orange. Misano Blue was probably my preferred color but I don’t like the bumpers or the painted plastic trim of the M-sport edition so the only option left was the Sunset Orange and I went for a sport line edition because it had the most black trim including the mirror caps. I love the Sunset Orange with the high gloss black trim my wife has on her M240i (https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1644646), so I went for all the high gloss black options available. Even the grill and tail pipes were replaced before delivery took place. If there would be a Shadow Line option pack for the X1 this would be it . Since I started the orange/black theme I thought I’d go all in so I went for the tinted windows, black interior, black headliner and black wheels. Actually I even chose the big screen for the navigation because it was fully black without the silver border. Considerations due to my back pains The car was chosen due to my back so a lot of thoughts have been put into the options. The most important is of course the seat. The sport seats are necessary for me. The lumbar support and adjustable side support makes them just perfect for me. I added electrical adjustment so I have the most flexible seats available. They are of cause heated as well. I also opted for the sliding rear seats for their flexibility in case I have to sit there due to some odd reasons. Automatic transmission is a must for me but I added the sports automatic. I rarely used the flappy paddles in my F30 but it is still better for me to leave my hands on the steering wheel when I want manual shifts. Even the leather option for the seats was chosen due to my back. I tried a lot of seats in different cars and I found that leather was the best option because it allowed me to slide into place. Alcantera was an absolute no go. The suspension is the standard suspension. I tried all three options and there was no doubt that the M-sport suspension was the most thrilling but it was too harsh for me and I don’t think it fits a car like the X1. I also tried different wheel sizes and found 18” to be a good compromise of control and comfort. The electric tailgate came with the sport line but that was needed as well. The less I need to lift or bend my back the better. The front and rear PDC, reverse camera and the mirror package with tilting mirrors when reversing and automatic dimming were also added. This way I don’t have to twist myself that much when reversing or lift my arm for dimming the reverse mirror when someone is behind me. So all in all my back pain did cost me quite a bit. Other options I like Adaptive LED headlights. I had adaptive xenons on the F30 and I found them to be the coolest and best option of all. So I had to have them. When driving alone I love listening to music so nothing less than the Harman Kardon would do. Then there is the HUD, heated steering wheel and comfort access. Nothing that is really needed but I find them really really nice to have . For the feeling of a bit of sportiness I added the M steering wheel and the M sport variable steering so together with the sport seats and the flappy paddles it gives a bit of sporty feeling when driving around. So please enjoy some pictures and I will update this thread for the years to come when I have some updates on the car. First mod was to disable automatic start/stop and to switch all tires from the summer wheel to the winter wheels and vice versa because i liked the winter wheels better. So they had to become the summer wheels.

A really interesting post to read, thank you!
One thing you might want to look into coding, if you haven't already, is the "Easy Entry" function for the electric seats. If you're not aware, it means the seat will slide back away from the steering wheel when you stop the engine and then open the driver's door. The seat then returns to the memorised position when you enter the car, sit down and close the driver's door. This is really useful for my wife, who is quite a few inches shorter than me, and sits fairly close the steering wheel. Makes getting in and out a bit easier, and I thought it may be useful to you too after reading your post |

Interesting post. Not sure if your car is petrol or diesel. The US and Australian cars are specked with higher output petrol engines producing I think some 245 bhp. Is this case in Denmark? Such an option is not available to us in the UK.
I seem to recall that Denmark also imposes some of the highest purchase tax in Europe on new cars - unlike your neighbours in Sweden who pay no purchase tax on new cars. |

Since the taxes in Denmark are based on WLTP-consumption it looks like the new X1 25e will be a success because an xDrive 25e M-sport will be cheaper than an sDrive 18i/18d M-sport. All are listed at about 63k € / 70k USD.

Beautiful! Enjoy it in good health
My 2020 M Sport is arriving in a few days. My first mod will be deleting the chrome outline from the grill

Thanks. Yes, I did consider an X3 but the entry height is too high when the seat was set perfectly for me. Also the car is wider so the distance from the outside into the seat is further away. Then I tried the X4 because that is a tiny bit lower than the X3 but I still had the same problem. I also tried the X5 but that one really taught me that a too high entry was even worse than a low entry. Best alternative to the X1 was the Mercedes GLC. It is about the same size as the X3 but for me the entry was better in the Mercedes. Driving it though was a boring thing.

Thanks. It’s a 170kw/231hp/228bhp petrol and I think it is the same amount of power all over the world.
If I recall correctly the 2 litre F48 in the UK is 189 bhp. It’s just sufficient and when mine is out of warranty next year, I think I may have the engine management remapped. However my overall fuel economy is 39.1 mpg which for a petrol car is quite acceptable. And I also like economy! |

Thanks, but it is not 100% fully loaded – only well loaded .
I did not choose any of the driving assistant systems. My old F30 that was literally fully loaded and I only used the blind spot detection which is not available for the X1. Then there is the adaptive cruise control as a part of the driving assistant systems in the X1 but I don’t like driving with it. So ordering any of the systems would just be waste of money. There was also the option for the adaptive suspension. I had a loaner for a couple of days with the adaptive suspension and I also had this in my F30. At first I thought it was a must have because I used it quite frequently when it was windy in my F30. But in the F48 the change in stiffness wasn’t that big and in windy conditions the car was still all over the road. Maybe this was due to the more bulky tires. Only difference I noticed was more noise from loose items in the cabin when it was in the sport position so that was skipped from the options list. The last big thing I didn’t choose was the panoramic sun roof. I don’t feel comfortable in big cars and I chose the all black interior also in order to give it a feeling of a small cozy intimate cabin. Since the sun cannot be blocked 100% by its curtain and since I rarely used the sun roof in my F30 I skipped this as well. Then there are probably some more minor things that did not have my attentions at all.

Hi, stunning car with all the options
I'm awaiting delivery to my nearest click & collect of my CPO X1 in sunset orange, was wondering does any particular wax/finish suit the colour? Any experiences to share with this paint colour? Seems to be pretty rare in the U.K. - didn't see any model in the colour at our local dealer when looking round to get a sense of size of the X1 (the curse of remote buying) Many thanks Alex |

I don't know if there is any special treatment or product but I can tell what i do. I have been polishing my cars myself for almost 15 years now and I believe I have come to results at par with professionals. I give my cars 1-2 treatments a year. I use the Menzerna products and a polishing machine. First the car is washed in two or three steps depending on the dirt. - High pressure wash in case it is really dirty. It is only a matter of getting sand/dirt of the car to avoid scratches from the real wash. - Wash the car with soap (any car soap without wax can do). First “real” wash is done with a soft brush with a light touch. After this wash most people would consider the car clean now. - Final wash is with a wash mitt from Meguiars https://www.meguiars.com/automotive/...iber-wash-mitt. Other wash mitts can do as well. Same soap is used as in second step. After this wash the car is clean and ready for polish. - First I give it a full polish with Menzerna 3800 - https://www.menzerna.com/products/po...ish-plus-3800/ - it has a minimum of cut and I use a polishing pad without any cut. The polish removes the final dirt that the washes didn’t and gives a fine shine. It also removes minor scratches and swirls that occur from normal usage. For this step I’d rather use more time than using a polish with more cut. - Finally I give the car two layers of protection with Menzerna Power Lock Ultimate Protection https://www.menzerna.com/products/po...te-protection/ . This is done by hand and the front of the car gets three layers. When I am done the car almost looks as if it has a final layer of glass. If you look in the thread for my old F30 you will see how an eight your old car with almost 200.000km can look like in its original paint. Also for more pictures of sunset orange you can look at my wifes m240i here: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1644646 . And no. You normally don’t see X1s in sunset orange. I have only seen a single X1 in sunset orange in Germany once.
