Question Working 2021 X1 HomeLink instructions?

Just purchased a CPO 2021 X1, and the HomeLink instructions in the owner's manual seem to be complete garbage. They refer to a green LED that doesn't seem to exist. (AFAICT, the LED on my mirror only does orange and red.) They're also horribly vague about the state the car is supposed to be in (engine running or not?), which exact buttons need to be pressed/held etc.

There are lots of videos on YouTube, but none of them seem to include the year/model in their title, so it's impossible to know if they'll work for this car or not.

Anyone have a recommendation for working instructions for this model?

Managed to figure it out, no thanks to the BMW "GENIUS" line, who insist that the vehicle has a green LED in its mirror.

This video almost gets it right, except that the LED in my mirror illuminates continuously when I first hold down the button to be programmed.
(The bit where the folks who made the video start arguing about what they're supposed to do is hilariously spot on.)

For posterity, here is the procedure that I used. Note that this procedure only covers programming the vehicle. For rolling-code systems (anything remotely recent, AFAIK), the opener must be programmed to recognize the vehicle; just use the opener's procedure for adding a new remote.
  1. Hold down the button to be programmed. The (amber) LED on the mirror will illuminate continuously.
  2. After about 20 seconds, the LED will begin blinking slowly.
  3. Hold down the button on the remote (while continuing to hold down the button to be programmed). The LED on the mirror will begin blinking rapidly.
  4. When the LED on the mirror stops blinking, programming is complete and both buttons can be released.
  5. If necessary, proceed to program the garage door opener to accept commands from the vehicle.

Glad to read you got it figured out. One can always go directly to the HOMELINK website for more details about their vehicle and type of GDO (garage door opener).

You didn’t write anything about clearing out any previous owners programming…which requires a press & hold of buttons 1 & 3 until the status light flashes quickly (at least that’s been the delete procedures since the time of my first HOMELINK in the 1990s).

Also, you’ve probably figured it out that the car needs to be powered (engine doesn’t necessarily need to be running) in order for the HOMELINK buttons to work. It’s a safety precaution…if it would operate with the car off…a thief could smash your window while parked in the drive or street in front of your house and gain access by simply pressing the HOMELINK button. Thus the car needs power in order for the HOMELINK buttons to work.
