Definitive Oil Selection Chart (All Engines)

Someone please sticky this

I had a hell of a time trying to find compatible oils for my car. Especially if you do not want to run the super fuel efficient (water like) oils. This is the compatibility chart from BMW ISTA. All engines are listed in the PDF.

I used the USA version to print out the data and it highlights in blue that the super fuel efficient oils are mandatory fills for dealers.

Very cool info.. but ultimately I'm curious as to what you decided on.

So our engine (whether you call it b46 or b48) is compatible with everything on the list. I am in the USA, and I did call to confirm with my dealer what they were using and it's the BMW oil 0W-20.

Now I have also been a fanboy of liquimoly for the last decade for the bmw's and toptech has been the one I look for, although with so many different "names" sometimes I just get whatever it is which I guess sometimes it means it isn't approved. I've also run 0w-40 before on other engines that might have burned a little oil. So for on my X1 and X2 I've been just sticking to the 0w-20.

What oil are you looking for/using in your area? I buy my own liqui-moly online or if there's some deal for BMW oil on FCP Euro or ECS tuning. Our stores don't carry the same things either much like the stores I'm sure you're going to..Canadian tire or auto value or something like that is what I was used to in Canada.

Pennzoil 5w40 Euro - LL01. Its usually on sale and works for both my B46 and N52 engine Summer. I may use 0W20(BMW) or 5W30(Pennzoil) in the winter for the B46.
