C&D Comparison: 2020 BMW X1 vs. 2019 Audi Q3: Which Is the More Compelling?
Car and Driver comparison out.
2020 BMW X1 vs. 2019 Audi Q3: Which Is More Compelling? I think the X1 will be a BMW that will be remembered as being under-appreciated and overlooked because of the type of vehicle it is. Sure it won't be for everyone, especially the BMW enthusiast and purist, but ultimately, it's a vehicle that will check all the boxes for the general car shopper. So I was making this decision last month before I bought my X1. Before going into the dealerships I fully expected that I’d be driving off with a Q3 within a week, and I didn’t think I’d like the BMW too much. Test driving the Q3 is what changed my mind. It’s got a nice interior and lots of tech, but it drove more like an oversized Golf with a floaty steering wheel, while the X1 has quite a bit of pep and was really fun around around corners. For that disappointing fuel economy, I was really surprised.
Understandably that’s not going to be everyone’s priority but having fun while driving is important to me. I was mainly looking for a fun AWD car to take me to trailheads and through snow while transporting outdoor gear and people. Anyway, I don’t think it’s an underrated car. It was the #1 small luxury suv on C&D for many years, and it’s one of BMW’s best selling cars. It’s just near the end of the model life and the competition isn’t. Reference: https://notesmatic.com/2018/11/bmw-s...lume-by-model/ Maybe it is not the best-selling SUV in NA, because people there fancy big cars, but Europe compensates |

We had narrowed it down to the X1 and Q3 but the Q3 wasn't going to be available as early as we wanted, so even though on paper the Audi looked like it was worth waiting for, we went with the BMW. After the initial Q3 reviews came out I was glad we didn't wait, and this is just further confirmation that we made the right decision. The Q3 has more up-to-date tech features but the driving experience is more important to me than the doodads. Plus, we've been really impressed with the X1's fuel economy compared to our previous VW with the 2.0T.

I had a 2015 Audi Q5 and just traded a VW Tiguan for this X1. I think the X1 is in a different league as far as quality, ride and comfort. The 8 speed gearbox is a step change improvement on the VW Dual Clutch and this Petrol engine is smooth as silk. Fuel mpg is 37 round town and A/B roads, better than the Q5 diesel and the VW petrol.

I test drove the Audi A4 Avant before buying the X1. I really liked the quality and the interior, but overall it was a very boring car for the pricetag it had. |

Presumably most of you guys in the US are talking about the Petrol models
The Diesel versions are still very popular in the UK/Continental Europe |
