X2 Windshield Chips

Bought a demo X2 with 5k miles. Amazing car, but after about a week, I cleaned the windows and notice crazy amounts of pitting on the windshield. I took it back to the dealer and they said they won't cover it under factory warranty, especially since it was a demo. Of course, I could have it replaced for around $1600... no thanks. I was also warned not to use Safelite, etc. ($600) due to sensor calibrations, warranty, etc. I've never had a car with pits like this even @ high miles. It seems BMW uses a softer glass in order to meet European Head Impact Requirements. I also drove a "loaner" X2 today and it had about 1/2 the amount of pits at 2k miles. Seems like it's a consistent and big issue. Anyone else have this? Any suggestions on solutions? Is it possible to get a US made harder glass replacement? Or do I just live with it until my next major window crack/ rock repair?

Looking for suggestions.

I had a windshield crack in a new Civic Touring and my insurance company paid for an oem Honda replacement to be installed by the Honda dealer after two attempts by the local Safelite store. YMMV

If it's not impeding your view then I recommend living with it until you really need to replace.

These windscreens are fitted so well by robots at the factory, that having humans involved with after-market replacement just asks for trouble.

Changed the windscreen on my 335i...and regretted it forever. And that was directly at the dealership.

That's not always an option in the US, with many states a cracked or chipped windshield means you'll fail your yearly inspection if your state has them, but there are 50 states and 50 different set of inspection processes. In some you can repair a chip, in others you can't and a replacement is required.

In a lot of states like South Carolina state law requires the insurance company to replace it for free and it doesn’t count against your insurance.

Technically it's not "free" the insurance company has that as part of your premium.

Maybe but its spread over all insurance owners just like Hurricane damage, wind damage, hail or other damages on a house. I pay $1,300 a year for two BMW’s for insurance with All State whether I get zero windshields or 10 so I call that free.

MA has extra cost glass coverage, it's not standard in all states, and feel lucky, I'm $1,400 a year for a single x2 with no accidents and full "good driver" points.
But then in MA there is barely a difference between insurers as far as cost thanks to decades of very odd government decisions.

Good advice. I'm looking into polishing the glass and seeing if that helps. It only looks really bad in direct sunlight for now.

Windshield polishing

I had a scratch on the driver's side where it seems the previous owner ran the wipers without the blade in the wiper arm. I have a friend who polishes scratched business windows for a living and he polished the scratch out on my windshield. It seems like a job for a professional, and even then there was a slight waviness to part of the glass, which I adjusted to. The windshield looks much better. I didn't want to go through the expense and potential problems replacing the windshield. So, you might want to see if you can find that type of business who would be willing to polish a windshield.

UPDATE: it looks like my dealer is going to fix or replace the windshield. I've got a good BMW salesperson willing to follow up on my purchase satisfaction and take action.

My M240 had the same problem! Unexplained tiny chips that kinda looked like dust. I even tried a clay bar on the windshield. That's when I noticed they were chips!
I just traded it in for an X2. I hope I don't have the same issue on this one.

Okay, so, my salesperson never came through. I left her several messages and she never returned my call. Crazy.

just got a 12 inch long crack on my windscreen today

These BMW screens must be so fragile. In literally 34 years the only cracked screens I got were in the last 3 years on my BMWs.

I'm worried about getting it replaced after the issues with dealer replacing my E90's.... I'll try to live with this one as it's not in line of sight.
