Replacing OEM 225/45R19 Tires

I am seeking advice on replacing the original RFTs that came with the M35i. Do you guys think the following tires will fit without issues?

235/50R19

or

225/55R19

When comparing dimensions online, there does appear to be some difference in diameter and width. https://tiresize.com/comparison

Any thoughts are appreciated.

There are some decent choices in the stock 225/45-19, what's your goal in changing size?

I assume you'll carry a spare?

Your speedometer will be way off. Just curious why you would want to go with those sizes - neither will handle better and both could handle worse on top of having your speedo be way off. I was contemplating 235/45/19s or 255/40/19 - the 255/45/19 has almost the same circumference as the 225/45/19s.

Thinking of replacing the summer RFTs with All Weather tires. For one thing, I want to avoid having to replace and store winter tires every year. And second since I can't drive like a madman in the city, I am questioning whether I even need ultra high performance tires on my 35i.

It's not like I'm checking my 0-60 time every weekend.

In lieu of RFTs, the plan is to purchase a mobility kit and, as a backup, call roadside assistance (BMW or AAA).

Makes good sense to run an AS tire but really should stick with the stock size. In that size, the Michelin Pilot Sport AS they list is a great all year tire, and the Continental DWS06 is not far behind...

With the calculation of 235/50/19 you'd be off by 4.53% which is just bare minimum acceptable difference in speedo.. 28.64mph vs 30mph on the speedo.. it's really okay and you'd have "beefier" rubber. 225/55/19 is really like offroad size really.

Stock is 225/45/19 and they come here with all seasons (as my car). As stated.. the wider the tire, the less theoretical traction in the winter. Still depends on the "look" you're aiming for.

I'm looking at All Weather (not All Season) tires.

They appear to be an interesting compromise between all-seasons and winter tires. I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need winter tires. Always trying to save money and time.

Will 255 fit our wheels? I would love to widen out the contact patch to make this car a bit more capable

Honestly I don't think any of those tires are a good match to the X2, much less the M35i. They're fine for SUVs but they're really not enough tire for spirited driving. Especially if oversized. MHO.

FYI, I've had the Nokian G3 (prev gen G4) on our Volvo SUV and they were pretty awful in the snow. Very disappointed with those. Maybe G4 is better, but likely only somewhat. Again, purely MHO.

I think they would fit - my concern is what it would do to the gas mileage...wonder how much it would go down...

The grip will definitely take a toll but it could be (slightly) offset if they weigh less than the outgoing 225.

I think the stock 19inch wheels have an 8 inch width.

Would a 255 tyre fit safely on that width? I'd have though a 235 or 245 would be better.

cheers

Wheel should have a width of 8.5 inches. I have thought of both 235, and 245 widths - neither is as close to o.e. diameter as the 255/40 option. I'm also thinking about staying with the 225 width in summer tires...I've yet to run out of grip on the all-seasons, and summer tires would improve grip from the all-seasons considerably.

Yeah, I pick up the car next week. I think I may just stick with the stock tires until next year. We'll see how she does in the winter. If it's a mess. I'll give away the stock tires and move to snows / summers. Once you're used to that combo, you can't live otherwise.

Change in thought...
I am now considering using 18" RFTs in the winter, and 19" non-RFTs in summer. Waiting for roadside assistance in the freezing cold does not sound appealing. knock on wood.

That's the best approach! The 18" wheels will allow a taller tire profile, this gives you more rubber on the sidewall which will improve the tire's ability to survive a pothole or curb, and allow the tire to get better grip in soft material too.

Be sure the 18's you choose fit the M35i. The M brakes require more clearance than the 28i's. See the other thread here recently for one idea.

I would go for 235/45-19s. The difference in diameter is very small, will give you a bit extra rim protection, and will fit the wheel just fine.

I drove a minivan with pilot sport 3 as tires on Michelin’s skid pad. Unreal grip.
