This is going to be a hot car. While ~$4000 is a big price bump, there's also a huge bump in standard equipment.

all-wheel drive, standard xLine with 18s, and power tailgate just to name a few.

Interesting. Even when loaded up, the price stays under $45k.

What in the hell is that gear selector though? I <3 the BMW automatic gear selector

Do you know if it's because of the platform, or are BMW going to change to this style of selector across the board?

My guess is that they are doing it purposefully to differentiate it from the up-market X3 and X5.

I think the auto gear selectors BMW uses on other models are great but this one doesn't offend me.

This is a fantastic package!

no heated steering wheel or headlight washers in the cold weather package?

45k for an x1... thats x3 pricing.. i can get a fully loaded x3 for that price in the same engine and xdrive.

Hahaha.......you and i both.

Because BMW wants people to drop $5000 for an average color, other manufactures offer for no charge. Just look at the M3/4 crowds, half of them are eating this "individual" special paint up. BMW has them hooked.

I believe you get heated steering wheel with cold weather package unless you add both drivers assistance packages. The engines are different and a similarly equipped X3 is 10k more and has a worse interior in my opinion.

Because this is based on a transverse/FWD platform (think Audi/haldex) layout, it uses an Aisin transmission, not the ZF8 you're accustom to seeing. This lever will likely be limited to Aisin-equipped cars. And yea- it's ugly.

I guess it depends on what you're used to. As a stick driver I think the automatic transmission's electronic "flappy paddle" is not particularly inspiring either, IMHO.

Also, the flappy paddle gets pushed forward to put the car in reverse, and gets pushed rearward to put the car in forward drive mode. I'm still scratching my head over whoever in BMW engineering thought that was a good idea.

Not sure, but it looks like the new X1 gear shift lever works more like a conventional automatic, with detents for each gear.

I am a MT guy, but where there's a slush box, I find less to be more. This thing is too big. Once you get the hang of the ZF8, you'll wonder what the point of a gated automatic is to begin with.

And yes- the Aisin is 'conventional' in that it's similar to most every Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Audi and U.S. Domestic on the road (transverse/fwd). Way more efficient packaging, worse balance/dynamics.

If a lot of people feel that way then the gear shift is something that BMW can easily claim to "fix" when it's time for the F48 LCI.

Regarding size, you could be right, though I'm reserving judgment until I actually sit in the car and try it out. I'm 6'3" and I doubt the shifter will feel particularly hefty in my meat hooks.

FWIW, I like the way Jaguar does their electronic shifters way better than the flappy paddle.

IMO the X1 should literally be a 30k car/truck thing fully loaded. Had one as a loaner couple months back and trust me.....there are about 20 other crossover things I would pick before I bought this (or any BMW suv, including anything M).
