Maintenance Schedule

I have a 2016 X1 that's out of warranty. Besides the car's computer telling you you need an oil change or brake fluid change, where can you find what other maintenance items are required a year after warranty and beyond?

If you enter your VIN here:
https://www.bmwusa.com/owners-manuals.html

You can find some documentation, in addition to the owner’s manual. One of the files (for me) was a maintenance schedule. If you don’t see it for your VIN, try using others (I copied from dealer sites near me) from other model years. Having looked at several, they seem to be largely the same despite differences in model years. It may be close enough

Thanks neilr. Seems site didn't work with Canadian models. Our owner's manual does not indicate maintenance items especially after 4 years of ownership

Here's the maintenance booklet that I found for my 2019 X3. I think it will apply to your 2016 X1 (it's what I plan to follow for my 2017 X1).2019-BMW-Maintenance.pdf

I don't see anything useful when picking a 2019 x1 other than it just saying "optional" everywhere and the same list at every interval.

I was looking for an standard guide and that wasn't it

Based on those attached maintenance schedules, for a F48 (X1), I see the following summary -

Every 20K miles: Replace ventilation micro filter, replace batteries in remote keys.

Every 40K miles: Replace engine air filter.

Every 60K miles: Replace spark plugs.

Anybody have maintenance schedule intervals for Auto Trans fluid, transfercase fluid, rear diff fluid?

Late model BMW vehicles utilize CBS (Condition Based Service) with mainly basic routine maintenance to be performed according to fixed schedules:

Thanks for all those links.
At what mileage, does BMW recommend AT fluid change for X1 (F48)?

AT fluid is affected by factors such as highway/stop-and-go, hot/cold climate, etc., not by straight mileage. CBS may monitor and alert you when to service.

Personally, I don't bother with AT fluid change, nor fixed maintenance schedules on cars I have owned, unless maybe there happens to be a sale/discount on service when I take the car in for something wrong. It always seems that things break down in-between after the last service and before the next service anyway ... haha.

My car has fairly low mileage (5 years old, ~35K miles). I used to follow yearly maintenance since it was fully covered by BMW. Last year was the last one covered.

I put less than 3,000 miles since the last maintenance due to pandemic. The CBS monitor says that engine oil and brake fluid change is required.

I wonder if I should still pay attention to timing (1 year between services) as oppose to actual mileage? Changing oil and brake fluid after just 3K miles does not make much sense to me .

Any thoughts?

Personally, I would not change the engine oil after one year and only 3000 miles. However, with regards to brake fluid, you would be well-advised to change it after 2 years because it is Hygroscopic and absorbs water. If you want to know why, just read the following information:

Buy a test kit to test your brake fluid. I changed it on my '18 at two years and 65k miles when I did the front brakes. Tested the fluid, 0% water. But the bottle was $11 and I already had a motiv kit from my last bmw so it wasn't a biggie.

if you have winters and drive very little, at least change the oil in the spring. I usually do every 6 months or 7500 miles since it's cheap and easy.

cabin and engine air filters, I do every spring also. Cheap and easy.
Spark plugs I would do at 60k unless you're running a tune. My F33 B46 was simple to do, less than 5 minutes for the first 3 and about 30 minutes for the last one.

My 2018 X1 has low mileage also, with ~24,000 km or ~15,000 mi in ~3.5 years. and the original BMW warranty expired as of last November.

I intend to keep doing oil changes every year and brake fluid changes every 2 years at the BMW dealer. These 2 items are cheap insurance relative to the cost of buying, maintaining, insuring and gas for the car. Personally, I don't want to be bothered with worrying about them, or doing the work myself.

Does the warranty cover oil changes if you do them more frequently than what the computer says? It seems to me that the computer is way too generous with the mileage between changes.

I think BMW uses nominal every 12 months or 12,000 km for oil changes, which is standard for synthetic oil.

In the UK with my new car(petrol), it is every 2 years or 19000 miles.
It was the same for my previous BMWs.
Audi is similar or at least it was on my Q5 that I sold recently.

My suggestion: if you plan on keeping the car, I'd replace the front bevel gear/angle gear fluid and the Haldex fluid. These are not recommended by the factory, but really their biggest concern is getting the cars through the warranty period.

It's crazy to me that there's no recommendation for the Haldex fluid. I've seen plenty of VW's with the pump pulled at 30K and the screen is almost entirely blocked.

You can find some info here: https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1683735

I also did 3 drain/fills of the transmission fluid, and I'll probably do a single drain and fill every 15-20K going forward.

I thought they changed it to 1yr/10k in the US?
I had mine changed for free by the dealer in April and it says to return by December or 9k miles. I'm guessing that's my last free one. I'll probably hit the mileage well before December.
Then I will start doing it myself at 6mo/7.5k intervals like I normally did on my last BMW.

Thanks for this...
I wonder why it is so hard to find this information.

My wife was just given a $6K estimate for 50K scheduled maintenance appointment. She had the check engine light come on once and then never came back on. No major issues with the car.

For some reason she says the service due light never came on on the car so she's very late on oil change. (2 years, yikes). That's on us.... She's always very good about taking the car in whenever the light comes on.
But she does drive VERY conservatively and doesn't race or rev the engine. Heck, I don't know if the throttle pedal has ever made it to the floor once. lol.

Anyway, the service advisor told her the following things the car "told" him it needed...

replace battery
diagnosis check engine light
replce front brake pads/rotors/sensor
PFGI- perform fuel injection service
PCCS perform cooling system exchange
PBSF perform brake fluid exchange
replace spark plugs
PD960 replace rear differential fluid
PT12LV/PTSC perform automatic trans fluid exchange
perform complete brake rehose

Does this sound like what a computer would report? I thought these computer based service reminders were just for engine oil, brake pads, and other smaller things...

$6K?! there goes the family disney vaca...
