Replacement of tyres - front only or all 4?

The front tyres on my 12/2017 f48 are due for replacement. There are about 2mm left on the front and between 3 & 4 mm on the back. I heard or read somewhere that it is important to keep our more than 3 mm difference between front and back as this could adversely affect the X drive.
Can anyone advise please?
Incidentally have achieved just over 25k miles on these tyres.

Sounds about right.. I'm used to the 3/32nds inch difference which is actually less than the 3mm as I look it up.

Either way, your tires are all basically dead if I'm reading this correctly ..you should buy all four. Here in Boston and in most states, the legal minimum limit to tire tread is 3/32 to fail inspection.. So if your front is already there and the backs are at 4mm which convets to 5/32 well.. If you have the time and effort and space maybe keep those two tires as backup. I personally wouldn't bother and get 4 new tires which start off at 9 or 10/32nds. Personally, even at 4mm it would be treacherous in snow and not very good at high speed in the rain.

Thanks for that. That is going to be painful on the pocket! The minimum here is 1.6mm and I always change at 2mm. As for winter, I run with BMW winter wheels and winter tyres. These are all good.
So 4 tyres it is!

hi
I am in the UK as well and I would change all 4 , I have just done 130 miles down the A1 with water across all 2/3 lanes on good tyre depths, I wouldn't have done that with 2mm.

Bought my 4 new tyres Bridgestone Turanzas 225/50R18 Turanza T005 99W XL. It might be worth noting the original were T001 not T005. However the new homolgated BMW F48 tyres are now T005.

What’s noticeable now I changed is theT005 are quieter than the T001. Is it imagination?

Do you guys rotate your tires? I like to rotate mine about every 5k mi. I've never got to a point with any of my cars or trucks where 2 were still plenty good & 2 were worn out.

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) rotate directly from front to back or diagonally?

That depends on whether the tyres are 'rotational'. If they are, you should only swap from front to back on the same side and vice-versa.
I also have a set of winter wheels/tyres and when I change them on my X1 (early November to mid March in the UK) I do swap back to front, or vice versa, to even out the wear on both (rotational tyres) sets at each changeover.

Yes. Thanks, I realize this. I should have qualified my question.

For the most part manufacturers for I'd say at least 20 years now have mostly directed just front to back 'rotating'.

Not what I was taught & not what I did for 2+ decades (yes I'm old) but tire construction/design changed a lot over the years which necessitated the new directive on moving them on the same side of the vehicle only. But to be honest I've not noticed that being a detriment to wear in any way.

Side Note: I find rotating every 5k mi or so is what yields max tire life in regard to even wear. With higher power/higher torque cars (especially S-drive models) with smaller rubber on them (like 225 wide tires) the drive wheel tires start getting chewed / chunked up in addition to just wearing faster straight across the tread surface.

Be safe / happy motoring!

So you are still a youngster then? I was born in 1942 and learned to drive on a UK farm with an Allis Chalmers tractor.

I plowed fields at the ripe old age of 15 and had the full UK driving licence in 1959 and owned cars without a break since then.

To stay on topic, I have mostly swapped tyres diagonally until very recently.

I agree with the above. I have done tge same thing. Same tyres, non runflats. Earth and heaven difference. In all aspects.
I have followed up tge 4 tyre change with a Hunter 4 wheel alignment.
It drives beautifully now!
