Easy.
I don't believe they replace the rain sensor, itself. On my Safelite work order there is a line item for $3x.xx attributed vaguely to the rain sensor, but when I checked the part number I saw that it is just the pad for the sensor that fits against the windshield glass.

For whatever reason they replaced the rain sensor. The installer said unsually the just order the gel pack, but in my case they ordered a replacement rain sensor. I watched him pull it out of the box.

I may still have to go to BMW and have it reset.

That's interesting. I wonder what would tell them in advance that one is needed over the other?

They came out to install the new glass but couldn't because they didn't have the gel pack for the sensor. When they came out again after ordering he said someone had ordered it so he was going to put it in. I think it was someone not knowing what to order (gel pack vs. sensor). I don't think there was any particular reason why.

First a cracked windshield, then now a tiny nick. But why always on the driver side? Can't we negotiate the rock chips Gods to make them hit the passenger side too these ones could be filled to ensure no further damage. It's few inches below my line of sight. It's the two small dots in the pic.
UPDATE: it can't be repaired as it it a surface chip so it'll stay like that white staring at me ...

Just the other day, I was driving my F-10 M5 on the freeway when I heard that dreaded knock. When I got home, there was a 8" crack on my windshield. Ugh! My car is at the BMW dealer having the glass replaced at a cost of $1700. I'm not thrill to hear that this is going to be an ongoing problem each time I take my car out on the highway.

Sorry to hear that, is the point of impact close to the edge of the windshield, like within 2" band? I don't get why you guys are paying so much for windshields... My M4 HUD cost $660CDN +200 for installation at the dealer. Unless the M5's is way more special!!!

your dealer must not be paying his workers if if can afford that. On my e90 a dealer gave me a quote for windshield at 12-1300$

folks in US - can you confirm that a standard glass insurance that installed by companies like Safelite gets you the OEM windshield?

Usually, the windshield repair is outsourced to an installer that comes and do it onsite at the dealer, at least that's how it is in few dealers in my area. And I am pretty sure these installers want to be paid and before you say it's not OEM glass, it's identical made by the same company Pilkington and same model, ... It's the first time that I see our US friends pay more for something, :

I'm in the US. I just had mine replaced by Safelite. It was identical to OEM. Dealer quote was $1,400 USD. Safelite did it for $603 USD installed.

The pic with the Express toll tag is the original windshield. The other pic is the replaced windshield by Safelite. Identical OEM and numbers.

Be sure to ask Safelite to verify the windshield is for an F82 or F80, whatever you have. I have an F82 and they claimed it was the correct windshield. But, they ordered one for an F80 and it was about 1/2 inch too wide. Same day they found one for an F82 and it fits perfect.

I have Geico, and normally they cover chip repairs with no deductible, but windshield replacements are a comprehensive claim subject to deductible ($1000 in my case).

I also have their Mechanical Breakdown insurance on my car, and when I called for a chip repair yesterday the agent informed me that windshield replacements are covered by this with only a $50 deductible. Good to know!

So I had my glass replaced a few months back due to a chip that spidered out. New glass is OEM glass, got it replaced under insurance, glass guy said it was a $700 piece of glass. Have gotten multiple rocks hitting my windshield since and not even a spec of evidence that a rock has hit it.

The only difference he said between the glass he put on and the one I had was the factory in where it was made. I told him I didn't want the same kind of glass if it was going to just crack again. He said that the glass on the BMWs are considered one of the best types of glass. He said he would make sure the piece he got was from a different factory.

I don't know if there is a way we can tell the factory from looking at it, but this piece seems to be doing a lot better than my last piece. He also warrantied the glass for 2 years (including chips).

Long story short $1700 seems high for glass replacement.

@04cobra does your new super windshield have the same markings as in the pics above or like this, they are at the bottom right driver side:
Pilkington
43R-001622
AS1M1246-2DOT682
E000201

You either got a different windshield, better/improved batch of the same model, or you have been lucky. Damage due to rocks can vary a lot depending where, speed, angle, type of rock, ...

whats the advantage of the mechanical breakdown insurance when you have a bmw warranty and free towing through bmw?

Yes, $50 for a new OEM windshield should I need one with this insurance add-on

It's intended more as an extended warranty beyond the manufacturer warranty. As long as you add the policy within your first year of ownership on a brand new car it remains valid for 7 years/100k miles. It's $50/6 mo, so it's already a lot cheaper than those 3rd party extended warranties the dealer tries to sell you.

You'd have to check with your insurance company, each one is different when it comes to glass coverage. Some replace windshields with a reduced deductible, while others (like Geico) make you pay your full deductible.

I have geico with full glass coverage. No deductible.
are you referring to policy w/o glass coverage where you would use comprehensive coverage and thus pay full deductible?
