Sunroof got stuck open again!!!

Hi all,

My 2017 sunroof got stuck open 49 months ago as I created a thread here. As you see, happened again!

Luckily Tulley BMW (awarded one of the best BMW dealer 5 times in a row) contacted BMW North America and got me covered as a good will customer! ( I didn't even ask).

Small things start to add up to give up this brand- it is really frustrating to have those issues. The entire sunroof replaced first time ($4000) -

It has 23K miles without warranty - should I get an extended warranty ?

I found the most reliable way of solving sunroof problems is to buy a car without a sunroof.

While that does sound like a surefire way to avoid the problem, I dont think that will, or should be, an acceptable solution haha. I know plenty of people that have never had an issue, and I personally enjoy the heck out of it. It definitely makes car camping extra enjoyable.

That being said, given that this is OP's 2nd time with this problem at low mileage, I couldn't trust that the problem wouldn't return. At some point BMW will probably decline to fix it again, leaving you with an outrageous repair bill for a problem you all knew was recurring. Maybe fix it one more time on their dime, and if it happens again ditch that car ASAP. Unless they can come to you with a real solution saying they found some kind of gremlin that was undiagnosed last time.

Also, curious how this problem presents itself, do you just open it during a drive and then park only to have the sunroof refuse to close? Either way good luck and keep us posted.

Right side of the sunroof opens more than the left side so it tilts and never moves up or down again. I was driving, thought that either windows are roof was open, I pressed the lift button then boom it got stuck open.

Sunroof issues are common accross every brand, I don't think it's a reason to hate BMW.
Do you keep the car in a garrage or outside? I wouldn't get a sunroof if it's the latter.

Panoramic sunroof is a must, otherwise it won't make a big difference to be honest.

I keep my car outside. Sunroof is fixed - I checked the parts in invoice, sunroof frame is only $2500! Luckily it is covered because the same part was broken 49 months ago.

Was it drive cable that you need to replace but you can't get it without ordering whole frame?
I have same issue and got an invoice of $5,500 to replace whole sunroof
