Red face Display at start up

Hi all, Just joined the forum today as a new owner, I’ve used these forums very successful over the years.
My question is about a message on the dash at start up or ignition on it only appears briefly but the reading never changes.

It reads in Yellow ….. Service 16000 mls followed by a month and year date.
Can someone please tell me exactly what this means?
I’ll try and add a photo, wish me luck.
Thanks in advance.

it just means you should service the car in 16k either oil change, brake pads, etc.

the more you drive it, the mileages should change to 15k, 14k & so on.

no issues - mine is set for 9k miles for service.

Many thanks for replying, you’ve confirmed what I thought. My issue is that it always reads 16k and doesn’t go down as I drive the car which I find strange.

It rounds on 1000 so it should go down after a while.

While BMW uses 20k Miles it would recommend to do a oil service every 12 months or 8k miles and not 20k or 16k miles, this is way overdue. Sure it makes the car to survive warranty period but if you want to keep the car longer I would recommend to it more often.

Hi, yes this is part of my question and issue, I bought the car from a Nationwide big name company and it was serviced before I bought it back in May this year and I’ve only covered under 2k since then as I have a summer convertible to use. So no way is it due the required service, can I reset it?

The car i drive is saying a service in 16000 miles or by 10/23 is required.
The idrive has not been updated if the car has actually been serviced to the required interval. If you go into the idrive it should give you the service history- but this can only be updated by BMW or approved BMW service provider.
A call or pop into BMW garage should be able to help you.

Have you gone into iDrive to open the SERVICE REQUIRED screen to see exactly which of the CBS (condition based services) is coming due? You’ve only scratched the surface of what the car is trying to communicate. You may want to check your owners manual (there’s one built into iDrive) if you're not familiar with all the info that is at your fingertips.

A green icon means everything is OK. An amber warning means a service is coming due. A red warning means service is overdue. You have an amber warning with a mileage or date that is coming due. Since the is already Oct 2023…you have a service due this month…vs servicing based on mileage. Again, if you go to the SERVICED REQUIRED screen in iDrive…it will reveal which service is coming due…it wont be a secret.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, you have gone above and beyond 👍👍
As the car was serviced by the dealer (I have detailed receipt) before I bought it and they apparently didn’t update the idrive as required, so the system thinks it’s due a service now.
As I only do limited mileage and won’t get anywhere near 16k in 12 mths is it ok to leave things alone until I have it serviced again near the anniversary of when I purchased it and then get it reset?
Or is it possible to retrospectively get the service recorded on the idrive by a garage with the correct equipment to keep the SH correct?
Sorry it’s longwinded.

Which service is due? If it was a service they performed & you won't reach the mileage limit…if you can live with the red overdue warning..it’s up to you. If it was a service that wasn’t performed…then i would recommend having it done, then reset the service.

You can also reset the CBS services yourself using the instrument cluster buttons…or the BC button on the turn indicator stalk if your cluster doesn’t have any buttons. But you can throw off your service intervals if you are not going to track your services and their mileage or due dates.

You can also get denied a reset if you haven’t met the required calculation for reset. I think it’s something like 10% of whatever the calculated fuel or mileage consumption. For example if you just changed your oil and did a reset…then tried to reset your oil interval again after only a few hundred miles (below the prescribed requirement)…it will tell you a reset is impossible if you haven’t met the criteria. You can see an example below from my old 2013 750ixGC. I had just changed the oil in 4/2021…and after resetting the oil service, you can see that the CBS mileage for the next oil service was at 10k and the date was a year later in 4/2022.

There are also videos on youtube that show how to reset the iDrive service intervals using the instrument cluster. So if you feel apprehensive doing it by just reading the instructions below…watching several videos of how its done may help ease any anxiety you may have doing it (if you’ve never done it before).

Many many thanks for the detailed reply, I’ve contacted my local BMW specialist about getting the service added and they explained that they are unable to add the service as it would show that they carried out the service (which they didn’t) due to having a garage BMW login and the correct equipment…..
So it’s back to the supplying garage to ask if they can do it……
I’m also happy to wait until the 12 mths is up and then hopefully get it serviced and recorded and reset..
Hopefully what you have posted will help another user as well.

Are you under some kind of warranty or maintenance plan? I would just reset it myself with the bc button. I did when it told me to change the brake fluid at two years and it tested no moisture. I do have a motiv brake fluid kit but why bother if no moisture.

I also reset the vehicle emissions check thing since the date came due.

Hi, yes I do have a 3 yr warranty plan with the car from the supplying dealer and to keep it valid I have to have servicing done when it is due. But I’m hoping if it’s ever need the receipt for their service will be enough to prove it was done, so I can wait until its anniversary and get it done then.
