I have the mid-level system in my UK X1 2016 model - Advanced I think it's called here.

I find the bass bloaty and mids are non-existent. Reading this thread with interest as I'm looking for the most effective way to give the sound an overall bump up in quality.

I like the idea of whatever requires the least amount of DIY also!

What's the general recommendation - replace the amp ... or replace the speakers?

How big is your budget for this upgrade? I'm saving my lunch money for this DSP amp upgrade. Rumor has it that you can do a "make offer" bid over at Ebay for around 559 GBP ($700US) for this unit. Have a look at the following article and vid:

I have the HiFi system also and was wanting to upgrade. I noticed you can get the H.K. systems on eBay for around $800 which includes all speakers and the Amp.

I'm curious if spending $800 on the H.K. would sound better than say upgrading to an aftermarket Amp and keeping the stock speakers.

I had a professional install the Pioneer Tweeters specifically made for the X1 and other Bimmers. The cover and door trim were removed and wiring was used. They come with a cross-over. I put in the new SUB in the trunk / hatch, it's a special one that is low profile and advanced design flat box with legs on all 4 corners so that the down firing sub can spread the sound from the bottom sides. Also I installed a power amp and active cross-over / eq. This freed up the subs located under the seats to act more like large mids. It is not worth changing the small 3" speakers. You won't hear a difference on the HiFi system and HK or others so leave them there. Bass uses the most power of a power amp so now with the second amp for bass really cleaned up the sound and made the system so much better. I will try and post pictures of the set up soon. The bottom firing sub has enclosure has a quick connector so that you can disconnect it if you need the space.

The speakers are called MATCH.
The cost of the replacement for front is around 250 €, for 6 speakers (twitter, middle and bass).
I retrofitted the speakers myself, mounting the tweeter in the corner where the original speaker should be, but without buying the expensive original frame. The design is much better than the original, in my opinion.
I'll get back with some pictures soon.
Where did ypu run the wires from? Did you tap the wires from the 3" mids? And if so how did this affect the subs since they're 2 ohms?

I've upgraded the amp with the UP 7BMW and the front speakers with the MS 42C-BMW.2 compo-set.

Sounds great, but I'm still searching what's the best place for the crossover filter in the front doors. Does any of you guys have a suggestion?

I have made the same change in my car as regarding the speakers set (see my posts from the previous page).
Take a look at the attached picture. The place is under the armrest.

Thanks!
I bought from eBay as used for f56 Mini Cooper model (same product and product number ) I don’t have the part number at the moment but you can get from Real oem web site
I'd like more details on this also. Looking for a budget friendly way to make my system sound a little bit louder.

Interesting thread! So are we saying the Hi-Fi stereo can sound good by simply replacing the speakers? Can the factory amp handle the ohm loads of different speakers? Also, realizing that we're all in different countries, I wonder if it's worth using part numbers to identify which amp you're using for the base stereo

Not exactly you really want to upgrade the amp! If you're on a budget; first swap the amp with the MatchUP. You'll experience a major improvement. Further improvement will be achieved by replacing the speakers.

In our F39 we've upgraded all the speakers except the center / dashboard after replacing the amp with the MatchUP. In my opinion the amp and the fronts (including the tweeters near the windows) are a must have. Subs and rears didn't made a significant improvement in my opinion.

Can someone clarify whether or not the HK amp (part no. 9390018) is a plug-and-play upgrade for the Hi-Fi system with no required coding or additional hardware swaps?

This thread has inspired me, but I don't have the budget for the third party options that have been recommended.

Is there a more budget amp out there? Can’t justify that spend unfortunately

You can install almost any amp in there, but if you want something that 1) is plug and play, and 2) has not only power, but full processing (x-overs, EQ, time alignment), this really is the only option.

If you're handy, you could look at a JBL JBL DSP4086, which will power 8 channels and has processing. It can also be found for about $300. You'd have to do take speaker level inputs from somewhere.

If you were paying for someone to install this, my best is it will cost more than the Match, which is a super easy DIY.

Thanks. I spoke to a local audio specialist, they said if your really on a budget, first thing to do is add tweeters and mid-woofers. Priced it at £300 installed. Thoughts on this? I know nothing about audio so trying to learn 😇 I wonder if you can do this yourself? Does it require any recoding ?

i went with focals for my mids which has the 2nd connectors to add in tweeters.

I had the hifi setup (no tweeters), so i bought the oem HK moulding for the front tweeters and added in just HK tweeters then I added in the back tweeters by cutting into the door panel itself - it already has the cutout for the tweeters - good improvement.

here's my rear door tweeter install https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1806542

my amp is JL audio with DSP
Front speaker: Morel Hybrid 402
Rear Speaker: Morel tempo ultra 402
sub: earthquake 8" underseat

The amp is more then enough and has DSP so I can delay some of the channels and set the ultimate listening position. I can locate where the musical instruction has been put. The amp can handle sudden output easily and powerful. class D sound .

Were did you find these details like how many watt's they are? Are there any other differences known? Some people say it's upgrade some people say you almost don't hear.

I found a cheap HK Amp (150 EUR) from the scrapyard from an i3 and took it with me.
Also found upgraded center speaker + tweeter for another car (120 EUR).

Now trying to source the doorlist + tweeters as most people say that makes the most difference. Not sure if I want to bother replacing the speakers in the backdoor and adding the tweeter in the backdoor.

I just installed the HK-amp in favour for the HiFi AMP i had but now the center-channel is waaaaay more pronounced. So much that I was wondering if the the door speakers still worked. But the do, it feels like the center speaker is on 50% volume while the rest of the speakers is on something like 25% volume

Did anyone notice when replacing the HK amp? I didn't code the Headunit yet so that might the culprit but if that doesn't improve the center channel to more normal levels then I will switch back to the HiFi AMP and sell the HK amp. .
