Stock Tail Lights to LCI

Question I have is has anyone swaped out the stock tail lights housing for the LCI / LED tail lights and if so did you run into any troubles. Much thanks for any information on this.

By stock, you mean pre-LCI? Pre lci are also LED and to be honest, I like them more than the LCI ones.

Pre lci are not full led!
Brake, flash and reverse are bulb!
You can easily swap them with leds though plus some coding to avoid flickering and errors, but lci are full led...

Yes I was talking about pre lci. I have a 2018 X1 without led headlights and would like to switch the tails lights out to the ones that come with the led head lights. Thank you for the responses.

Mine has LED headlights, so the taillights of mine are LED. The brake, reverse, indicator lights are not LED though. It's an easy swap with LED bulbs, and afterward there's not much visual difference between this and the new LCI. I actually prefer the position of the pre-LCI reverse light, and the taillights look better on the pre-LCI.

I debated doing this but agree with 00max00 that the pre-LCI look better than the LCI. Ending up going that route. Personal preference I guess.

If your X1 came with halogen headlights and taillights, there's a wire that will need to be repinned in the plug. Then coding everything to LED via BimmerCode. If you're interested I can take some pics to explain the process.

This will apply to pre-LCI LED tail lights. I have no experience with the LCI version, which seems to have a different bulb configuration. Someone else will have to chime in on that application.

Part #s for LED outer and inner taillights:

63-21-7-488-547 - Left Outer
63-21-7-488-548 - Right Outer
63-21-7-350-697 - Left Inner
63-21-7-350-698 - Right Inner

While you're at it, might as well pick up LED bulbs for the brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights:

1156 Brake lights and turn signals: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H6VLWX2

1156 Reverse light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H6WSL4R

Remove the outer brake light housing and detach the factory plug. There's a purple retainer clip that you will need to slide out using a small screwdriver. This will allow you to depin the wires.

To depin a wire, using a small screwdriver, gently press down onto the catch of the wire you want to remove. This doesn't require much pressure.

Once released, you can pull the wire out.

Now using your small screwdriver, gently reposition the catch to it's locking position. This will now be ready to repin.

There are small rubber grommets inside of the unused wire slots. You will need to remove this. I used a small pin to slide it upwards out of the plug. Try to keep it intact, and reuse to plug the new slot that will be left open after your repin.

This is the configuration of your final setup.

Light Blue
Purple
Open
Brown
Open
Yellow/Black

Be sure to replace the purple retaining clip when you're done.

There is no repinning needed on the inner tail lights. Simply remove the old light, grab the new one, swap the halogen bulbs for LED, bolt it on and you're good to go.

Next, go into BimmerCode. There are two sections you will need to make adjustments, all in Simple Mode. Everything is located under BDC.

The first section is for the rear daytime running lights. You need to change all of these to active.

Next will be under bulb types and bulb monitoring. If you're changing everything to LED, just scroll through the list and adjust everything that pertains to the rear lights to LED, and turn off all monitoring.

Check you out.

LED rear turn signal bulb swap

I tried swapping to LED yellow or clear turn signal bulbs (I have the Euro market rear lights with yellow turn signal). I discovered that the LEDs were too bright in the dark, and could distract/annoy the driver behind the car. Has anyone had this problem, and found LED that are not super bright? Thanks.

Has someone told you they were distracting/annoying? If you're convinced they're too bright, you'll probably have to do some trial and error. Find a bulb that doesn't have top-mounted chips - although this is going to make your turn signal significantly less visible. For most people that would be undesirable.

Something like this:

Good suggestion

Thanks for the link to the LEDs that don't have top mounted chips. I will try that type of bulb. The mechanics that did the bulb swap for me noticed the problem of the lights being too bright. I agreed.

There's a lot out there, like I said, it may just be trial and error to find something that fits what you're looking for.

Thanks. I was thinking the same. Do you have any of the links where you found the lights. I started checking on eBay and most of the stuff seems available.

Have you Sat at a stop light behind a new audi? I think our cars are going to be just fine.

I purchased the lights from www.onlinebmwshop.com, which is actually BMW of West Houston, TX. They have a 10% off coupon that can be used and no sales tax. eBay's a good place to check though, I actually bought the set of outer lights in brand new condition there for $100. Unfortunately USPS cracked them in shipment.
