Rough idle when put into gear
Our 17 X1 is having a rough idle issue on a cold start. When you start the car up, everything is normal, but if you put it in drive or reverse, the RPMs bounce around and the engine sputters and shakes. Once you get going it's completely fine. If first started happening when it was cold outside but now it's basically every cold start. No check engine light or any other warning lights. Anyone have an idea what it could be?

There was a post about it somewhere else.. I've only experienced it once, and it literally was because I was so hasty to turn on the car and put it into reverse immediately.. let it idle for literally 5-10 seconds and it'll be fine.

General rule of thumb on all automatic cars is that you should not put the car in gear immideately when you start it, but wait for a few seconds. Otherwise you get this rought first gear switch.

Problem with modern complex cars you need a diagnostic scan otherwise its just guesswork.

I had similar issues in my 2018 X1.
As my vehicle was still under warranty, I took it to dealer for service. BMW tech was unable to pull any fault codes. Ran Idle Speed Control Test Plan. Per the test plan, performed intake smoke test. No leak found. Per the test plan, performed misfire detection test plan. No mechanical fault found. Test plan then stated that “new software is available to improve engine performance” Programmed the vehicle, haven’t had any problems since. |

Mine does the same be h from time to time , but I've noticed that it goes away if I turn off the ac. No CEL so no idea how to diagnose since it doesn't always happen.

Had the dealer look at it while it was in for service...it had a pending code for "irregular timing change" or something to do with timing. Dealer said that BMW is working on a software fix and for now they just reset adaptations. Service advisor said it's very widespread.

ok, so my 2017 25i started this recently only on cold start and would sometimes stall. Local BMW dealer said no fault codes but hooked up diagnostics and sent data to BMW Australia. Fault was a fuel tank ventilation valve.. it was replaced under warranty. Cause is normally dirty fuel but have only ever put 98 octane from Shell. Maybe change to BP.
I also read there was a software update but not sure if it applied to the B48 engine.. |

If the mileage is low or normal it shouldn't need new spark plugs. I had my X1 custom programmed for added features like LEDs that I added in the fogs and tails...I also had the auto stop/start feature removed so that when I start the car unless I put it in eco mode it doesn't default to that annoying start / stop. I don't think it's good for the car and even when I put it in Eco mode I turn that feature off. I also use gas that has no ethanol in it. In Canada our Shell stations do not contain ethanol in the Super. While in the USA the Shell stations have a disclaimer at the pump that mentions that there may be up to 10% ethanol. I don't like ethanol as it causes carbon deposits in direct injection engines and can gum up injectors. Stay safe and healthy everyone.

You can always try to reset the powertrain's ECU and let it recalibrate. You can do that by starting your car without turning on the engine. Step on the gas pedal for 15 seconds. Shut down your car then wait 15 - 20 mins before you start the car again. Try not to mess around variables like gasoline brand and quality and always use the highest grade fuel as tiny high compression turbo engines like the one in X1 needs it to run smoothly.
