I bought a new Vectra many years ago from main dealer in Southampton. Picked it up about 4.30pm. Drove about 5 miles and then stopped to fill to top with Fuel. Half way through the chap on the next pump said "Hey Mate - your car's on fire" and pointed to front. Smoke was billowing out of the wheel arches. Carefully popped the bonnet (hood) and much smoke but could not see any flames, and no flames underneath.

Decided best bet was to get off the forecourt just in case and as only 1 mile to home set off. Parked on drive at home and once again vast amounts of smoke. Phoned dealer but everyone had gone home and was advised to call RAC out. RAC man impressed with fact that car had less than 10 miles on the clock - took it round the block and same again but not quite so much smoke.

Turned out that the dealer had not removed all the gunk protecting the exhaust properly and it was gradually burning off. Took about two weeks for it all to burn off.

So first problem at 7 miles

I jest of course... But I've been down the BMW road before and I know that they're great when they work but expensive when they don't. I owned a 1997 328i and a 2003 Mini Cooper S, which in fairness were both longer in the tooth (not extremely high miles, but high enough). Both cost me a lot of money in maintenance, but I also got them both for relatively cheap.

This 2020 X1 is my first "new" BMW (it was a service loaner with low miles). So I'm just hoping that I've got a few years until trouble starts finding me.

I know it's built on a Mini chassis, so technically it's not a full on BMW, but I really love the car overall so far. Now over 300 miles in.

Is the 2 series on the same chassis too?

Has the X1 always been on the same chassis with the mini and 2 series? I have always had bmw sedans. We bought a used 2016 X1 last fall. We needed an extra car that my teen could drive to work and sports activities and use to ferry the other kids to their activities. And of course a vehicle that works well for trips to the hardware store, etc.

Thanks

Thanks
The latest version (F48) (2015 onwards) is based on the Mini chassis (2 series and latest 1 series)and a lot of the running gear.

The previous version (F84) 2009 -2015 was based on the same platform used in the E91 3 Series Touring.

As long as you properly break in the engine before 5000 miles, keep the oils changed every 5000 miles ideally (including transfer case, differentials, and transmissions every few ten thousands miles), it should last a long time based on the reliability reports I've seen. It might be one of the most reliable cars BMW has built in the past 10 years.

This is old thinking and old methodology and not necessary because production methods have moved on where machining tolerances have improved to the point where there is no gain or benefit at all by breaking engines in. You just have to follow the manufacturers guide lines in the early life of the components.
Similarly oil technology has moved on where oils are completely synthetic (man made) rather than refined oil from a refinery with just a few additives.
I know all this because for many years I headed a laboratory (using different spectrometry methods to check for wear metals in oil see note below) for the RAF and we monitored all lubricants used in engines and transmissions in vehicles and piston engine aircraft.

I agree with the reliability to some extent, but other manufacturers are just as reliable. The BMW X1 now accounts for 12% of all BMWs production.
Note. Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program. Commonly abbreviated to SOAP.

If no one gives you a cast iron answer, perhaps email Bimmertech...

Honestly it can't hurt. I'm planning to change mine around 60k mark as I have been putting the transmission through extra wears due to modifications. You don't necessary need a full flush, a partial change is good too. That way you get to see how dirty the fluid is and is cheaper to do.

I've recently changed my transfer case fluids, it's quite dirty at just around 30k miles. Been checking out the VM forum as they have the similar haldex gen 5 cars. They've been changing their oil at around that interval too. Felt the difference right away after.

Absolutely wrong. Unless you are running a NSX that is factory "broken in", an improperly broken in engine can cause oil burning and leak and lowered power output. Had a friend who rode his new mercedes A class hard out of the door. Now his engine is burning oil like crazy after just a few thousand miles. But hey, if you are leasing or just don't care about the longevity of the engine, go on ahead! In fact, it says it right inside your X1's manual.

Comparing an airplane engine that's constantly running to a car's engine that goes through countless start/stop cycle which cause oil degradations at turbo? No that's a terrible analogy.

Please read what I said. I quoted vehicles as well, so my statement is completely correct. Anyway you do what you like, you are wasting your money. Industry has a lot more data to go on than you do and ever will have, and we do not see masses of worn out engines across all manufacturers because they did not break engines in (called running in) and carry out engine oil changes at 5000 mile intervals. I know because I did a lot of the testing work on oils for industry.
Anyway....you carry on with your good advice, I can see a lot of users heeding it.

If you do a lot of testing on lubrication oil, then you should know the temperature when that oil will start breaking down. What temperature do you think your turbo is usually at?

Again, this all depends on how hard you drive your X1. I drive mine hard, thus my onboard computers usually tell me to change around 6000 miles mark. I'd like to go in a bit earlier as my dealership let me do that.

As for the transfer case and differential oils, it depends on how hard you drive as well. At 30k miles it's dirty on mine, and most GTI owners with gen 5 haldex.
