Pretty much anyone in your IT/HR department can check anything on your company product remotely.

Um, no.

I don't want MegaCorp to know I've had a fight with the wife/girlfriend (or both), am stressed about my M2 parts being delayed, I lost my line of credit at the bank, my cocaine habit's out of control, the cat's taken up gambling, etc.

Keep your work life and your personal life separate. No good can come of things otherwise.

As a case in point:

We had one of our company's pilots called into the Chief Pilot's office because he'd apparently been surfing porn sites on his company iPad. That was bad.

What was worse, was that it was happening at the EXACT time he was in the Chief Pilot's office-- which was sort of a puzzler.

Turns out that his kid had been bogarting his iPad when he was home to watch porn. He had no idea until Company IT/HR caught him.

There's a lesson in there somewhere.....
We recently had an employee use the company shared drive to store some of his personal data. Because this particular employee is extremely smart and also really dumb, he decided to change the password for the shared drive. (not exactly sure how he had the credentials to do so.) He either entered the password incorrectly initially or simply forgot the password. I don't feel like I need to go into details how well this went over. Let's just say that all of our KPI data for the last 10 years was temporarily lost. IT was able to retrieve all of the lost data, along with way too much personal info on the employee. Said employee is now blocked from the shared drive completely.

To elaborate, we are a over 200 year old Japanese based company, with facilities in the U.S., Japan and Europe. The entire company uses this shared drive. When it became known that the reason none of us could access the drive, then to find out it was an American employee, then to find out it was an employee at our facility......yeah, things turned dark fast.

Holy shit! Haha. Glad IT recovered all that data. He must've felt like a real tool after that incident. Is this a trading company? Just curious.

IT should be called to the carpet for this! If some bozo pawn can wipe an entire shared drive, think about what a ransomware attack could do to your company's data because the permissions are set too promiscuous.....

Heh - reminds me of the good old days working with a friend and we were either using NT3.51 or NT4 workstation - can't remember which. Anyway - I decided to remotely edit his registry, and changed all his colors to black - so his screen was black on black, with black everything and black everything else. He was kinda miffed but saw the funny side and I helped him restore it back to normal after a bit.

To prevent me doing that again, he removed *ALL* permissions from everyone (system process, Users, the WORKS) for the Windows folder and all subfolders. I can't remember how far through it got before it locked up and never came back. Mike took me out for beers that night and confessed to what he had done - I fell off my chair laughing

To make it an even greater kick in the pants. I have low voltage guys installing a new door access control panel system, that is tied in with our monitored fire alarm. Now IT won't install the software for us to utilize the $37k we dropped on the system, due to security concerns. Security concerns.........oh my ribs hurt. We have 7 firewalls now, but can't seem to keep some dolt from locking everyone out of a shared drive.

Oh we make sure this individual feels like a tool at all times. He's a bit of a pathological liar. I had to listen to a story a while back about how his left eye is a cyborg eye. Apparently the government provided him with prototype robotic eye after a seagull flew into the cabin glass of a plane he was in. The yarns this guy spins are nothing short of ridiculous. We all generally try our best to avoid him at all costs.

See, this is where my mind goes too. I love to hear supervisors complain about their employees. Instantly I want to reply with, "Well, you hired them. Stop hiring hiring idiots and you don't have idiots working for you."

What are they going to do, put IP-based door access controllers onto the guest wifi VLAN so that any 12-year-old can unlock the doors from the parking lot?????

Flip-vga was my go-to, especially after drinking beer at the local dive at lunch time. Text virus warning, clear screen, flip-vga. Ah, the good old days of autoexec.bat

Worse. Right now, the panels, card readers and intercoms are all installed....with no service. Our facility is wide open at this point....until IT decides that the cloud based software poses no threat to security; whilst our facility is currently unable to be locked. "We don't trust the software so we'll just leave all the doors unlocked 24 hours/day. It makes me simultaneously want to laugh, cry and bang my head against a wall. The real kicker, they asked me to get this done and now want to argue with me about it.

We used to do a tradeshow in Vegas and this same guy would show up each year. He had these elaborate stories about the government cross breeding humans and chimpanzees for strength trials - called them "Himpanzees". First time we thought he wondered in off the street and was off his meds, but we saw him at 2-3 more shows and his story remained consistent.

It was actually pretty elaborately put together and there were very few questions he did not have an answer for - and the answers remain consistent.

When you saw this guy - your radar screamed "crazy" - he literally LOOKED crazy, but he was nice enough and we all knew him as the "Himpanzee dude". One year he kind of over stayed his welcome and we had to politely shoo him on - and we never saw him again. We laughed for years about where he is now.

These people are everywhere.
