EGR Recall

I have my 2016 X1 booked in for main dealer service next month (4 year service).
They advise I have an outstanding recall on the EGR and will need to leave the car with them all day.

Anyonwe know what this is about and why BMW haven't contacted me about it before now?

There could be a variety of reasons, so anyone giving you an answer is only guessing. You should be asking BMW UK because it is safety-critical.

Quite a few owners in Greece had the recall done.
Bear in mind that it requires some ECU update, too so any tuning or coding will be lost!

In most cases an EGR system recall is related to emissions, the EGR system isn't safety related or critical.

You are incorrect!
The recall is for safety, so, it is safety-critical. See...

BMW is extending its recall of diesel cars, after it was found that faulty parts could lead to a potential fire risk. In 2018, BMW originally recalled 268,000 UK diesel cars after it was found that glycol leakage from the engine’s exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler could result in burning soot deposits when combined with the high temperatures inside the EGR system. Now, this recall has been extended to a further 27,000 vehicles in the UK.

BMW has confirmed that is has extended a recall of cars affected by a potential fire risk.

The German car maker initially recalled almost 300,000 diesel models in the UK in 2018 but has said that a further 27,000 cars are now being recalled to check for a potential fault.
Quote:
The fault relates to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler, which helps cut NOx emissions. Leakage of glycol from the EGR cooler can combine with soot deposits in the EGR module and lead to the melting of the intake manifold and, in rare cases, result in fire.

I took mine today, they confirmed there is no need to replace the EGR and its safe to drive. There are some specific models that require replacing. It was good to get the car jet washed for free though

Well had my car in today for its service and EGR recall work.

They showed me that before they started the work there was an error logged on the EGR so they managed to replace it (outwith warranty) and charge it to BMW!

That was a bonus!

I have a "Do not wash this car" sign in my car, that I put on the dashboard and the front seats when my car goes into any dealer.

By the way, what is the dealer's name?
