I wonder why the website I buy my LED bulbs from has the brake lights selling in a set 4 and a set 6?

For all the rear bulb housing that goes into the socket, can someone confirm:

1. Number of pins - is it 2 or 3 pin design?
2. Pin orientation - if 2 pin design, are they spaced out 180 or 150 degrees from each other?
3. Can you use P21W bulb types for all 5 bulbs? Per BMW service manual, the turn indicator (side panel), rear light/brake light (side panel), rear fog light (tailgate) and reversing light (tailgate) are all P21W. But, the rear light (tailgate) requires a W5W bulb.

I'm looking into swapping all the rear bulbs to LEDs, but want to make sure I get the correct types the first time around. Want to avoid removing the rear taillight assemblies just to find out I got the wrong bulb types.

Thanks a lot.

I am not sure about the bulbs but here is the website I used to buy my rear LED lights. I also used this same company for my front headlight and fog LED bulbs. The lights are super bright and you can normally find a code to save 10-15% off.

How do amber LEDs look through red lens cover?

I am thinking of changing my US spec rear turn signal bulbs to amber LEDs. How do the amber LED appear through the red taillight lens? Do they show as amber? Thanks.

Inner + outer rear brake lights AND rear turning signals:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Reverse lights:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Front turning signals:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These work flawlessly after coding to LED bulb and disabling warm/cold monitoring in all zones.

Thanks, Proper. Links helps to confirm cross compatibility. Replaced front turns couple months ago with a different brand. No issues so far. Will be doing rear ones soon.

For anyone else who might come across this thread: I had both amber and red bulbs on hand, and put the amber ones in the rear turn signals first to see what it would look like. The light was still mostly red, just a lighter shade of red than with the actual red bulbs.

I prefer amber turn signals but it can't be accomplished using a red lens and amber bulb, so I ended up going with the red bulbs. At least they'll match the brake lights.

Thanks for this info about what the amber bulbs look like through the red lens.

followed the instructions here and coded via bimmercode app for LEDs in the rear and disabled all temp monitoring. The rear signals, reverse lights, and outer brake lights all work fine. The inner brake lights just flicker when starting and don't work when the brake is depressed. Any ideas? I bought the LEDs that Proper referenced in his post. I uploaded a clip to show what I mean

The inner brake lights only light up during heavy braking, so there's no way to have them come on while parked. The flickering makes me think you could have missed coding out a bulb check, but to be fair, I haven't looked to see if mine flicker in the same location even though I definitely disabled all the checks. May have to do that.

Did you code the inner brake lights? It is actually called rear fog lights and you need to code out the cold/warm monitoring as well code bulb type LED. That is the reason it's flickering.
If I understand, if you want them to behave as additional brake lights under normal driving conditions then see my thread in this forum, 'activate rear fog lights', for code.

FYI, the inner lights are designed as rear fog and emergency brake lights under severe braking.

thanks all! I thought I was losing my mind, I missed changing the bulb to LED function, and for some reason I always assumed the inner brake lights worked under normal conditions.

Thanks again, I'm going to try to code the inner brake lights (fog lights) to serve as additional brake lights and/or code the brake lights to serve as turn signals now.

AJ,

I had the same concerns re. fitment. See below for cross reference to bulb sizes with BMW spec in parathenticals:

* Reverse, tailgate: 1156 (P21W) LED
* Inner rear tail, tailgate (small): 194R (W5W) LED
* Inner fog, tailgate: 1156 Red (P21W) LED
* Rear turn indicator: 1156 Red (P21W) LED
* Rear light/brake light, outer: 1156 Red (P21W) LED

I left out brands but LED options meeting the above spec will fit.

Good luck.

Appreciate it. Just wasn't sure how many sets to get. Looking at the Phillips options as they've got a new range.

Any suggestions for high beams? I know it's H7 but is there a spec like maximum watts etc??

The ten bulbs he was referring to were:

2 x front turn signal (1056/BAU15S amber)
2 x rear turn signal (1156/BA15S, red or amber to match your country version)
2 x rear reverse light (1156/BA15S white)
2 x rear brake light (1156/BA15S red)
2 x rear fog light (1156/BA15S red)

I installed all of the above. Our X1 has LED headlights and license plate lights from the factory, so didn't look into options for those.

Front low and high beams are both H7s. I use Hikari Ultra LEDs for low and Nineo LEDs for high. As far as spec, I'm not aware of any other requirements beyond compatible bulb size.

As a note, be aware that you may need to modify the low beam retaining clips to clear the heat sink, depending on the bulb's housing design. Both the Nineo and Hikari sets could not be secured without modifying the metal retaining clip.

High beam should be less of a concern as there's no clip to deal with.

Thanks Skyline. I got the Phillips Ultrinon for the low beams and it fit very easily. Will go with the recommendation on the high beams. Appreciate all the support!

I am very new to BMW and to a 2016 X1. Are there any LED bulbs that do not require coding?
