Riiiight, because those are the two vehicles most likely to be cross shopped, the X2 M35i and the M2.

The existence of the X2 M35i doesn't negate your M2, or any other non-similar vehicle you may have or want. The X2 M35i is priced similar to "actually comparable" vehicles from Benz (upcoming GLA35) and Audi (upcoming SQ3). That's what matters.

I agree. It is stupidly expensive. I mean are people really going to spring $50k for a "normal" hatchback? Maybe if it were a shooting brake M2, but an X2 WTF actually?

I believe the price difference is about $8k-$10k. Not quite the "same price".

This car seems to be more in line with the Golf R. It's AWD, more power than the R, and even a front LSD. 0-60 is under 5 seconds.

Also, you seemed to have done quite a bit of rounding. The X2 seems to start at around $45-$46k. The R starts at around $40k last time I checked.

I think his argument was based on other factors - such as fun to drive, which the GTI is known for, plus impressive utility in a small package, also a traditional GTI trait.

Arguably, you can get more fun and similar/better utility for a much lower price. But that's just a guess.

I'm glad to see people realizing an X2 is not an SUV. Bravo. This is a hatch and a Golf R is a much better buy. This car is destined for failure.

If cars were priced based on their "fun" factor, then Miatas would be far more expensive. BMW has to price their cars based on the equipment they put in them. I realize the X2 doesn't seem make much sense, but the price doesn't seem too crazy compared to comparable cars on the market. I'm sure there's a market for this car. Just look at cars like the GLA.

Close enough.

Does it matter what it is? This car is basically a slightly lifted S3 (hatchback version we don't get, anyway). It's priced about the same and probably drives a bit sportier. Sure none of us would buy it, but it doesn't seem to be out of line from other cars in its class (GLA, S3, CLA, etc.)

This motor might actually save the F56 Mini, but they'd never do that.

The original M2 started at around $54-$55k right? And the Competition is $59k. The automatic M2 costs $3000 more as well.

The X2 m35i is $46,450. Still a bit pricey, but not out of the range of the competition. Certainly not "close enough" to the M2's starting price. I agree the m2 is a better deal still. I'd definitely rather pay an extra $9000 for the m2 (non competition), but $9000 is a significant amount of money. I'm not sure how that could be construed as being close in price to the X2 m35i.

Recently had a chance to spend a few days in one as a loaner. S.A. asked what I thought of the car...looked at car, looked back and said "why"? He laughed. Said he gets that sort of reaction a lot.

Unfortunately many of these BMW models exist due to clever finance.

Total agree with the Golf R comment above.
