How does the F48 determine brake pad replacement?

Brake pads and rotors are 8 months old. The calipers were painted over the weekend.
Today I received ab idrive message that front pads will be replacing in 15000 km. Wondering if this is just bad timing due to km or the paint somehow got on the pad sensor and is causing a short.

15,000 is just an approximate. There is a wear sensor that will go off once it hits the rotor and then you'll get a REAL warning that the brake pads are low. Drive on!

Interestingly the next day I got the red warning that brake pads are gone. One day after the 15000 km warning. I checked the pads and pulled the sensor. Both look fine so it seems like the sensor is on the fritz. Cheap enough to replace.
