When will you buy a Tesla?

When would any of you buy a Tesla? What needs to happen for that to happen?

For me its when the price goes down and the weight of the vehicle goes down to be similar to gas cars. I have no brand loyalty for any brand.

I was a Tesla hater for a long time. During the middle of the pandemic I was bored out of my mind. My C7 was always acting up so I decided to sell it and get something else. Only thing that was of any interest was a Tesla... mainly because it was electric and I have owned most types of vehicles but never an electric one. So here I am with a Model 3 and a total convert.

Now let's be clear. It's a totally different experience than what probably most of us enjoy when we drive for fun. It does not satisfy my itch of a manual loud ass V8 which is why I'm looking to add another car to the garage. However as a daily driver and for what the vast majority of people want a car for I think it's fantastic. Especially if you can charge it at home in your garage I basically always have a "full tank".

I think it's comfortable, crazy fast in a straight line, which honestly for most driving on highways and FL that's all I need. The tech is great if you are into that and I personally don't find the build quality that bad. If you are not an enthusiast you would probably not notice a couple body gaps that could be smaller or not totally even etc. No normal person would notice. I also found the interior while super spartan was actual made of nice quality materials and the sound system is one of the best I've heard.

Would I compare it to a sports car no. Totally different categories IMO. However as an all around car I think it has little competition. Plus what does a base 3 series start at? I haven't followed BMW pricing in a while but I'm guessing it's similar to a Model 3 and personally... I would take the Model 3 ANY day over a base 3 series or frankly any 3 series except maybe an M3.

I also still have issues with a lot of things Tesla does and frankly I think their service is total crap, however that does not take away from the fact that the car is really fantastic.

when they start being competitive with civics/accords for under $10k on the used market. competitive as in reliability. While also being able to be recharged as fast or faster than it takes a gas car to from empty to full at the pumps so that a road trip is feasible. i'm not waiting somewhere for 30 minutes to recharge when my civic can get 300 miles of range for $10 and a 5 minute wait.

EV = commuter car for me. I dont desire any performance in them. i have separate cars for that. just make them cheap and reliable with decent build quality (no rattles).

Very few rational people when it comes to Tesla. They are either total fanbois who will give Elon $10k for the hope that their car will drive itself some day in the future and then you have people like Crimson92 who hate Tesla just because. Fuck that hippy bullshit!!

Never, and I say that as a former employee who enjoyed my time there.

While EVs make sense as commuter cars for the general public, they will never match the driving engagement of traditional cars. No gears, no noise, heavy curb weight...not for me.

Then when it comes to Tesla specifically, they are a tech company not an enthusiast-oriented automaker. The entire goal of the company is to remove the driver from the picture. Their cars have become incredibly common and are their fans are a cult of straight up dweebs, I've experienced it first hand. They are either tech nerds, holier-than-thou environmentalist types, or both. These are the types of people who are destroying my hobby and I don't want to be associated with them.

Garage List
I’d have a model 3 if I had to commute, without question. I am a little worried about how many years I’d get out of a battery, and the environmental impact of making and recycling them, but I’m definitely sold on the idea of an EV.

I’d rather have a BMW EV, but if they’re going to look like the iX then I’m not interested at all.

I'm not sure I'd ever be interested in one of their cars. Although I do not rule out the possibility of them partnering with a company that actually knows how to build cars and then I might. Probably not though.

When they produce a N/A high strung, lightweight car with an awesome exhaust note.

I’ve driven a few and they are holistically not good cars. They have good acceleration but nothing more. They are soulless ghouls of a car. Like an automotive sex doll. I’m an old man now but still, put me down as not interested.

Call me when Hell freezes over. Just not my bag....the only EV I have seen that I have any interest in is the Taycan, and for the money I have no interest in one.

My experience so far and here is the list I went through:

2013 - Model S P85
*door handles stopped working after a year - replaced under warranty
*pano roof kept getting stuck
*sold and got into a P90 then moved up shortly after to the P100D
*on the P100D had the motor go out and a charge port that failed - both replaced under warranty

2018 Model X P90D
*my VIN was sub 1000 (I recall it being in the 800s)
*Falcon wing doors got stuck 4 time - had to be towed twice because they would not close
*door sensors replaced twice, but doors kept getting stuck
*front passenger door latch would not latch with soft close system
after 50ish days in service I contacted VP of NA sales and they took the car back - no questions asked. Offered to give me a new one and I opted to wait until 2019.
Jan 2019 took delivery of new car - still have issues with Falcon Wings, but not as frequent as before. Am just tired of having to deal with service and rather not send in for svc. My wife really hates the car - so I got her the X7.

2018 Model 3 for my son
*typical gap and paint problems - but am just really tired of Tesla for its quality or lack thereof.

Teslas are ok for commute purposes, but I would recommend anyone looking into getting one to go over to teslamotorsclub to glance at the current issues and make yourself a checklist for when you pick up the car. I am not a hater of Tesla, just giving my take as an owner.

When we run out of Petrol.

And I will bury some really big tanks in the backyard if we get close. Full of 93 octane.

Likely for my next car. I assume I'll keep my 18 M2 for another 6-8 years and then be done. That has been my plan since I purchased this car. I wanted one last great expression of a gas car as a DD. Plus, given the current rate of advancement of EV tech, I wanted to wait a little longer to adopt.

The other cars in my household are a Model 3 dual motor (2020) and a Volvo XC90 T8 (2020). Both are charged off of 220 volt plug in the garage, and both are great cars. When I want to go skiing or take long drive, say up to the Bay Area, either of those are more attractive to me than my M2.

I will miss the noise of the M2, but in 6-8 years there will be no very little else compelling about the vehicle compared to the Teslas or other performance EVs available. They will be faster, with a significantly lower CG, they will have reduced environmental costs, they will be cleaner to run, they will require vastly less maintenance and be infinitely more reliable (no charge pipe issues or crank hub failures for sure).

I intend to still have a gas car as a track toy, but as a commuter and even a weekend driver, a performance EV will be just fine.

I was planning on getting a Y Performance, but with some of the announcements on battery day and general speculation of the market place, it seems like the battery chemistry is going to exponentially get better in the next couple years. As a result I opted for a used F82. Hoping to eventually get a Tesla once the EV market matures and stabilizes a bit.

I'll buy a Tesla as soon as I buy an iPhone.

Seriously though, it's not the product that is annoying. It's the people who use them and feel the need to feed it to others. You have a great product. Great! Keep it to yourself. Don't come telling me how great it is and how much better it is than other stuff. If it interests me, I'll try it sooner or later. But don't annoy me with it -- it's a turn off.

Roughly 2 years from now if all goes to plan. When my daughter graduates highschool there will either be a new Model 3 performance or a used Model S in my garage......right between my E93 and my pretty cherry 1995 Lexus LS400. I can and will have a charger in which ever garage bay I decide is dedicated to the Tesla. I took a road trip with a friend in their Model 3 last year. I've been concerned about the charging time on road trips.....it wasn't an issue. We stopped to eat, just like I would've in my ICE vehicle, and by the time we were done so was the charging session....about 25 min or so.
