No, the spacer would only work for wheels that had TOO MUCH positive offset. So a wheel that is say, +38mm, has the outside rim closer to the fender outside edge. Now a wider wheel say 10" with +45 very likely would contact the INSIDE of the fender well or front strut--that's the setup that would require a spacer to move it out.

I saw them in a TireRack ad in the Nov. Bimmer listed as 18".

Yes, I'm afraid 40 to 45mm offsets will be the most common for 1-series, although 38mm will most likey work if tire sizes aren't excessively large.
