hmmmmm
Why all the hate? Looks are subjective but its very cool, sorry if you don't see it. The interior and seats are awesome and the LED lighting all around the cabin is a step above my former M3, this thing looks sick inside when driving at night. And as for the drive, coming from an F80 that I drove hard every mile for over 3 years, I feel no big letdown in daily driving situations with this car and this engine, its great whether some want to accept it or not. I have hope that the future will be fine with amount of power (151hp per liter!) and torque of 450nm that M has bestowed upon this tune of this great BMW engine. Mixed with all wheel drive and M diffs and DDC, it drives like you'd expect a sport sedan would with all the power you need day to day in local driving. If you don't like the looks so be it, but don't put it down until you drive it

Pretty much, a 2019 X2 xdrive28 was my last loaner and the hidden-Mini underneath all the dressing was apparent from the get go. The engine sounded louder and rougher in transverse form vs the longitudinal B48. The aisin transmission has nothing on the 8 speed ZF. It could also use some serious sound deadening. The ride was also very punishing. The extra $5000 for the X3 will be money well spent...

I knew it was a bad sign when the car arrived with literally zero fanfare at all (hell most ppl don't even know it's out).
That said, anyone interested in it might be best served waiting a few months, as I'm sure there will be deep discounts to be had. |

It’s not worse if you prioritize driving fun over space. The X2 in general handles much better than the X1, due to the lower CG. Coming from the previous generation X1, the current X1 was a huge disappointment to me as far as driving dynamics, and the X2 was acceptable.
I expect this M35i version to be even better. What’s not to like? Absolutely wrong. It is much shorter and lower than the Active Tourer. It will be as different to drive as 330i vs M3.

Obviously you care more about comfort, and I don’t. When I took one out as a loaner recently I drove the exact same route as my daily, and thought it could be a good daily runabout: quick, nimble and with acceptable ride comfort (!). The again I’m coming from an M3...

With a front locking differential, I somehow doubt it.
Maybe in reverse?

The X1 is already at the smallest end of the SUV spectrum....any smaller than that and it's basically a 4-door hatchback, IMHO. I like the X2, but at the end of the day I'd probably just get a 4-door VW GTI hatchback and a tuner kit and call it a day (and maybe pocket a small bucket of cash).
It'll be interesting to see if this shortened X1 variant finds its market. This new peppier model is bound to help. Last edited by ShinySteelRobot; 03-11-2019 at 02:00 AM.. |

It's interesting seeing all the hate and discontent this car brings. The X1 consistently wins comparisons against the competition but still isn't "good enough".
This new M35i has a similar feel to a 340i and the tune is quite ridiculous. Torque is available fast and in gobs, it definitely doesn't feel like the same engine as a standard X1/2 even though it is based on it. The transmission is not quite as brutal as the ZF in sport mode but it isn't far off either. The sound is quite sublime and if you think it's all fake, roll down the windows and it gets even better. If we had 340 wagons in the US I probably would've gone a different route but this X2 pretty much checks all the boxes and I personally like the way it looks. I haven't had the pleasure of taking it up to the mountains yet but on the few twisty areas I have been able to drive it handles spot on and I have no doubts you can swing the rear end out if you want too, I've already felt it break a little just from accelerating a little too briskly mid apex, being that I am used to the X1 taking a little time to wake up. If you try it and still hate it, that's cool, but to rip on it without seeing what it can and can't do is just silly. |

Yup! Mine arrived to the port yesterday. Now I can keep my M2 track prepped.

Here’s another.

BMW has not done much to promote it. I’m not sure there is a big market for an expensive small SUV in the US. Perhaps this will be a low volume seller that will hold its value well over time as people discover how much fun a small high horsepower practical vehicle can be.
