EGR valve cleaning?
F48. 2.0D XDRIVE 2016. UK.
I've started getting a fault message, accompanied by what feels like a limp mode. Error is 'Drivetrain: Possible to continue journey: Full performance not available' I've Google it and think it may be related to an EGR valve issue. I thought I'd remove it and see if it's clogged up, and if so give it a thorough clean and see if the fault goes away. Problem is, I'm not sure where the EGR valve is, and I can't find anything on line to help me. Any suggestions, and also any comments on the fault ? Incidentally, the car was recalled last October for EGR cooler, but I'm not sure whether they changed it or not, and whether this fault could be related to it. But I'm reluctant to put it into a main dealer initially, as I know from experience they charge a fortune just to diagnose. |

I had an issue with my 2016 2.0d xdrive where mine was checked under a recall and recalibrated by BMW. I suspected this was connected to diesel gate and adjusted for emissions?? Within 6 months mine had failed, car stuttering and lag under acceleration, dealer diagnosed failed EGR. So I called their bluff and said fine you checked it and within 6 months it fails, so BMW agreed foc replacement. My understanding is that the EGR on our model year was a problem, mind was replaced with modified version. I would try dealer some are better than others, good luck

I had the same problem, just 6 months after i bought the car (new). As it was still under guaranty, I didn't have to pay anything for the replacement of the EGR.
The valve was maybe faulty, but I also think that driving on "D" which makes the engine turn all the time at low RPM (roughly 2000 per minut) is not the best for the EGR, from them I always drive on S/M which gives a higher RPM, and 3 years later I didn't have any engines problems. |

I had the car into an independent last week. They diagnosed the issue as a 'broken' air hose, which they replaced. Total cost £910. Part of this was an 'essential' software update, which added £200. The car is fine now, but I do feel I've been ripped off.
I've got the old hose, quite a large item, maybe 70mm diameter, and it wasn't actually split. It's made up in a few sections, and one had pulled away from the other. Would have been easily fixable with a jubilee clip, but of course garages just change parts these days, they're not engineers. |

Well, the 'Drivetrain: Possible to continue journey: Full performance not available' error is like a general error; it could be many things.
But yes, £910 seems too much for replacing an air hose! At that price, going to BMW would be cheaper IMO. However, it's different, for example, if they replaced the chargepipe or the boostpipe. You know, there's a lot more labor to do. Quote:
