10.25 inch screen with wireless CarPlay installed on my 2017 X1 xDrive28i
Just got this installed today, the new headunit retains all the factory stuff, including the iDrive system. My original headunit is the small 6.5 inch one, I coded it to the factory 8.8/10.25 inch resolution mode for the new headunit so the original iDrive system won't look stretched out on the new screen. After the coding work, the new headunit is now able to display the original iDrive system in split screen mode and everything worked flawlessly. The new head unit does support wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, tho I have to say the CarPlay is a bit laggy at first, but I suddenly realized it's mainly because of the Wi-Fi band mode is on 2.4Ghz, so I switched the band mode to the 5Ghz one and it feels way better now. Feel free to ask me any questions you got and I'm happy to help!

Wow - this looks great. My 2017 F48 also has the small screen.
Questions for you marticztn 1. What did you buy and how much was it? Do you have a link? 2. Did you install it yourself? If yes, how? If no, where did you take it? Many thanks in advance. |

No I didn't installed it myself, I took it to one of the local auto repair center (BMW independent specialist) and they installed the unit for me, that costs me for $240 (which I know it's kinda expensive) |

I heard the 4x4 shop screens are WAY better than the other ones on the market. Did you get the upgraded blue anti reflective?
My two main questions are: 1. Would this still work with the factory heads up display including HUD navigation directions in both the factory Nav and CarPlay? 2. Would this still work with my BMW Connected subscription that is pre paid until the year 2030? Zzzz |

About the factory stuff, you don't have to worry at all cuz it's just an screen replacement, not the center console. So you can continue to use the original iDrive system with your subscriptions and also your HUD. Tho I think CarPlay navigations won't be displayed on your HUD. To be more specific, I think they've done a pretty good job in terms of consistency. You can switch between the iDrive and aftermarket system pretty quickly. You start the car, it will show the original iDrive, and if you've setup the CarPlay before, it will automatically switch to CarPlay if your phone is in range and the WiFi and BT are on, no problem at all. The thing is tho, if you play music via the iDrive, then you switch to the aftermarket system, the music will continue to play but you won't hear any sound. And I found that the music experience with this head unit is not very great, especially for the bass part. The bass is broken and it sounds like crap, idk if it is because of the cable inside, but I've made an appointment with the auto shop which they installed this head unit for me to do a recheck on that, I'll let you know by then. But other than that, this is a perfect replacement I would say! |

Thanks for the response. I think I'll drive over to 4x4 shop next month when I have a chance and check it out. First priority is retrofitting blind spot monitoring, then I'll look into the screen retrofit. Zzzz |

I just gave them a call. Have to admit their customer service is pretty great so far. Very responsive and knew all the answers right away. Confirmed that my factory HUD will work, BMW Connected Services will continue to work (My car is prepaid until the year 2034, I don't want to lose that!), and my touch idrive controller will continue to work. I currently have the 8.8" screen.
They charge $150 CAD for the installation at the time of this post. Around 3 hours install. They'll also do blind spot monitoring install which I really want (one of the reasons I almost didn't buy the X1 until I found the retrofit kits work great.) $750 CAD installed. But they didn't tell me which brand it is. Goshers is supposed to be the best one. Martivztn, a few questions if you don't mind answering. Does the BMW factory navigation in the new unit include the ability to change between ETA (time of arrival) and Trip Time Remaining? (I.e. 18 minutes remaining). Can you confirm all the BMW factory functions work? And does the steering wheel control invoke Hey Siri or Google Assistant? Thanks! Zzzz |

So like I said earlier, all the factory stuff will remain untouched, everything will going to work just like before! For the voice command button, if you're in the original iDrive system and you have your phone connected to the iDrive, then you long press it, it will continue to invoke Siri / Google Assistant. Tho if you're in the android system of the head unit, I don't think you'll be able to invoke Siri / Google Assistant. I might be wrong tho, I'm still trying to find all the possible features of this head unit as well, but that's all what I know now, hope it helps! |
