Who has deactivated “active sound design”?

Was it worth it? Did you notice a huge difference in the sound?

Please describe.....

A couple people have commented through the threads.. it's a 50/50 split. I turned it off.. and decided it was too quiet for me so I flipped it back on. It's a subtle background buzzing. In a way you can hear a difference when you flip between comfort and sport (but it's cheating since it also opens a flap in the rear exhaust).

I like quieter ride, so I turned it off and I don't regret it. It feels more comfortable for daily drive. At the beginning, it's like missing the sporty feel a bit, but I got used to it. Anyway, when the rpm is over 3000, you will hear the exhaust anyway. Not as loud for sure but more natural.

Also with ASD on, for me it gets annoying on the highway after awhile. I had to switch to Eco mode to reduce the sound, but it changes how the car behave.

Actually at the beginning ie 2019 when I was testing the asd, in comfort mode it was not on.. So on the highway if I want it quieter I just put it in comfort ( I run it in sport all the time ) things might have been different or I might have been crazy but I was flashing it on and off while I was idling in my work parking garage to see if I could hear it better or worse with the echo.

You can hear the subs pop when it goes off/on when programming.

It’s really just a drone in sport.

I tried it off for a week or so but greatly prefer having it on.

I don't know if there's any difference between using BimmerCode to "deactivate" it or BimmerLink to "mute" it, but they sound the same to me. The advantage of BimmerLink is being able to toggle it immediately for a real-time comparison while driving.

While I find the added low frequencies to be somewhat fun, I have mine turned off because it introduces a constant deep hum at idle and I can't see that doing anything besides degrading your music quality. Maybe a rev threshold would be a better option... say, only introduce added engine noise after 3k RPM.

That sounds pretty cool... I actually haven't been bothered to try bimmerlink yet .. i should plug in the free mode to see what it can do, but not sure if there's many features I really need..

This is a great point. There are so many settings in BimmerCode where you can choose the distance before something cuts off , or the time, it shouldn’t be a problem at all to add a option on the active sound design section that was “rpm tiered”… Correct? (Are you listening Bimmercode?)

Because I want the absolute most quiet when I’m running down the road at 75 mph for hours on end, in any of the modes…But I like the Max roar (fake or not) when I’m around town…

It's important to understand that Bimmercode isn't actually reprogramming your car, it's tweaking settings that are already in the car's software. There is a ton of sophistication under the hood in settings that aren't surfaced in the end product, for any number of reasons (markets, regulations, regional preferences, shared components with other models, etc etc). Bimmercode just reaches in and pokes their bits.

This may be why Carly stopped working with the latest BMW updates. If the setting changed location in memory, or a different protocol message is required to set it, then the apps need to learn the difference, and be updated. Speaking from experience, it can be a bit of a treadmill.

Slightly off topic from the original post. Kind of wish BMW would not be investing time in developing piped in sound for their cars. This adds cost and complexity to the car. On my M2 I bypassed the ASD completely with a wiring harness change since even disabling via coding left residual noise/hum. On the M2 the ASD was awful.

I don't own an X2 (yet) but will be placing my order shortly when my company car lease expires. So I don't know how annoying to me the X2 implementation is. I know that it is highly subjective based upon the responses on this thread.

For those that are interested in a full bypass here is the harness I used on the M2.

Not just the cost to the car... money for some of us to remove it too (Bimmercode or Bypass).

Thanks for the info about the bypass. I didn't pay enough attention I guess or my ears are not as good as yours for the residual sound. The day it will bother me, I know it exists.
