F1 has always had ONE dominate team for 1, 2. or Ferrari of the early 2000's seasons because they had "some" technical advantage.

Look at the list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...#39;_Champions

Either the other manufactures "catch up" or F1 changes the rules to even the field. It's been going on for years.

I do miss the 80's and the coffee can sized 4 cylinder turbos that made 1000+ hp at a squillion rpms.

Two sets of rules is stupid though.

Here is an interesting article about the FIA's position on the subject of budget caps:

Q & A with FIA's Tony Purnell

Also, I was reading a post over @ Speedvision...errr...SpeedTV forums, that was talking about how this all came up. Basically the FIA asked the teams what to do about cost cutting and capping, and asked for their input like 2 years ago. Afterbeing asked repeatedly the teams never replied with any ideas. so the FIA went drastic to get their attention. Apparently it worked. Maybe a little too well.

You can read the post here

I think Ferrari is right (Not that I am a Ferrari fan since I root for McLaren) on!!!!!! If Ferrari leaves, its sure that Mercedes would follow suit and Ferrari and others can create a F1 substitute. I don´t think these are Ferrari threats, they never threaten and the pull back.

Oh but we might have Penske and Andretti Green to replace those that leave

I really hope that this is a bluff by Ferrari. But something tells me that the chance of that is the same as the FIA actually coming to their senses and listening to someone outside their soggy biscuit circle

Red Bull, Toyota, and Renault say they are out if the two tier system doesn't go away too.

Red Bull out means Red Rull & Toro Rosso out.

With Ferrari, Toyota & Renault that'll be 5 out of 10 teams out in 2010.

Would the FIA really prefer to have Prodrive, USGP, et al instead?

I think they might at least settle for it.

Maybe a bluff but FIA seems to have broken terms of their unique contract with Ferrari ie. Ferrari's right to veto rule changes & technical stability.

I guess we'll see what happens when they show down at Heathrow this week.

I don´t know, could be a bluff, just don´t think they would bluff that big. I suppose we´ll see which side is bluffing.

Exactly. They carry a BIG stick in F1, so I am sure they will change the rules even moreso to accomodate Ferrari. Politics in action!

I tell ya what a year to become a fan of F1!!!! Some interesting stuff to follow. Ferrari & BMW are not doing so hot. Hamilton is getting lapped.

Now the possibility of these teams leaving next season.
What's next

Budget cap = teams w/ money will not be happy.

No budget cap = teams without money will keep losing. They will quit if their sponsors pull out... which is entire possible knowing today's economy.

Standardize too many things, and F1 will start reminding people of Nascar

^ Are non-factory teams a new thing to F1? What's different about this year that requires budget caps when F1 has been around for decades without it?

The problem is, the budget cap will be impossible to enforce.

They said its economy related, to prevent teams from dropping out, to keep the sport going. But any argument with money as focal subject is sticky in the first place, sigh.
